A young woman has been missing for the past 14 days in Bihar’s Darbhanga district, with her family alleging that she was abducted by a Muslim man who intends to forcibly convert her religion and marry her.

The woman is an adult. Her family has filed a police complaint and appealed for Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary-led Bihar government intervention, alleging that efforts are being made to convert her religion against her will.

Went to college, never returned home

According to her family, the woman left home at around 11 am on June 24 to attend college but did not return by evening.

After an unsuccessful search, family members made inquiries and claimed they learned that she had been lured away by a local man identified as Mohammad Tufail alias Rehan Shah.

The accused reportedly works as a tailor in Mumbai, and his residence is about 1 kilometre from the woman’s home.

FIR registered against seven people

The family said they visited the accused’s house but found it locked, alleging that all family members had fled. They subsequently lodged an FIR against seven people, including the accused.

Family alleges attempt to force religious conversion

The missing woman’s sister alleged that her sibling had been kidnapped and appealed to the government for help.

Her mother said she feared her daughter was being forced to convert her religion before marriage.

“I will never allow my daughter to be married after religious conversion. We are Hindus, and I want her to marry a Hindu man according to Hindu traditions,” the mother said.

Police investigating all angles

Police said an investigation is underway.

Jale Police Station SHO Sandeep Kumar Pal said a case has been registered based on the family’s complaint, and tracing the missing woman remains the police’s top priority.

Officials are examining call detail records and phone location data. Police said they are investigating all aspects of the case, including the family’s allegations regarding an attempted religious conversion.
