Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who was on an indefinite hunger strike against alleged paper leaks, ended his fast on the 27th day. Late on Thursday night, Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh broke his fast by offering him juice at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, where he is undergoing treatment.
After ending his hunger strike, Wangchuk appealed to people across the country through a post on X to maintain peace and stay away from any form of violence.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a video message addressed to students late on Thursday night, stating that instructions had been issued to set up fast-track courts to deal with cases related to examination paper leaks.
The concerned departments sent a draft proposal to him on Thursday night, which includes provisions for fast-track courts and strict punishments. The proposal will be discussed by the Cabinet on Friday, following which the government plans to introduce a bill in Parliament for approval at the earliest.
At around 2 am on Thursday, protesters at Jantar Mantar climbed over police barricades and moved them around as if they were vehicles. During the incident, they were seen raising slogans of “Azadi”.
