The Allahabad High Court on Friday granted parole to slain gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed’s jailed sons, Ali and Umar, allowing them to attend the funeral of their younger brother, Aban, who died in a road accident.
The order was passed at around 3.30 pm. Ali is lodged in Jhansi Jail, while Umar is imprisoned in Lucknow Jail.
Officials said it could take six to seven hours for the brothers to reach Prayagraj after the court order reaches the respective prisons. As a result, Aban’s burial may take place late on Friday night or on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the family has kept Aban’s body in a deep freezer until the funeral.
Will Shaista Parveen attend?
Attention has also turned to whether Atiq Ahmed’s wife, Shaista Parveen, will attend the funeral.
Shaista has been absconding since 2023 and did not attend the funerals of either her husband Atiq Ahmed or her son Asad after their deaths.
Aban, 21, will be buried at the family’s ancestral cemetery in Kasari-Masari, where Atiq Ahmed, his father Firoz Ahmed, brother Ashraf and son Asad are also buried.
Deputy CM dismisses questions on Aban’s death
During a visit to Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya was asked by reporters about Aban’s death.
Responding briefly, he said road accidents occur every day and questioned why the incident was being treated differently.
Aban will be buried in the family graveyard. Her grave has been dug.
Aban’s body has been kept at her aunt’s house for final respects.
Aban died while travelling to meet jailed brother
Aban died on Thursday morning in a road accident near Jhansi while travelling from Prayagraj to meet his brother Ali in jail.
He was travelling in a Creta SUV with four friends when the driver reportedly tried to avoid an animal on the highway. The vehicle crashed into a road divider.
Aban and one of his friends, Sonu, died in the accident, while three others sustained injuries.
Their bodies were brought from Jhansi to Hatwa village in Prayagraj by ambulance early on Friday morning.
Family stores body until funeral
The family has placed Aban’s body in a deep freezer at his aunt’s residence in Hatwa village while waiting for the parole process to be completed. Two additional deep freezers have also reportedly been arranged to preserve the body until the funeral takes place.
A family member who travelled to Jhansi to receive the body reportedly said, “He belonged to Allah, and Allah has taken him back,” a remark similar to one made by Atiq Ahmed’s brother Ashraf after the police encounter killing of Atiq’s son Asad in 2023.
According to family members, Ali, who is in jail, was devastated after learning of his younger brother’s death and reportedly did not sleep or eat throughout the night.
