Ahmedabad Crime Branch Seizes Devices From Journalist Ravi Nair

Ahmedabad Crime Branch has conducted searches at two locations linked to journalist Ravi Nair in connection with a case alleging the use and circulation of forged documents related to claims of investments by the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) in Adani Group companies.

The article was published in the Washington Post on 25 October 2025, with the title ‘India’s $3.9 billion plan to help Modi’s mogul ally after U.S. charges’.

According to Police, the searches were carried out to locate and seize documents allegedly used in connection with the case. During the operation, police seized two mobile phones from Kerala and a laptop from Delhi. The electronic devices will be sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) for examination, an official said.

“The forensic analysis is expected to help us establish the origin and authenticity of the material stored on the devices and determine whether any other persons were involved in preparing or circulating the alleged forged documents,” said an official in Crime Branch.

As of now, the Crime Branch has conducted searches but no arrests have been made in the forgery case, the official added.

FIR over alleged forged documents

The case stems from a complaint by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) against Nair. The company alleged that documents circulated by Nair in connection with a report published in The Washington Post were false and fabricated.

Subsequently, a case was registered by an Adani official under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to cheating and forgery on 29 May this year at the DCB Police Station, the FIR of which has been kept under ‘sensitive’ section by the police.

Allegations made in Washington Post article

The allegations concern claims that the government and LIC had planned a large-scale investment in Adani Group companies. LIC subsequently denied having issued or received the documents referred to in the claims, according to the complaint.

Nair had earlier approached the Supreme Court against a Crime Branch notice in the matter. The Supreme Court declined to entertain the plea in March and permitted him to approach the Gujarat High Court.

Following which, the HC dismissed his plea seeking to quash the FIR filed against him.
