According to locals, the statue was removed from Vidyasagar Shishu Udyan in Ward No. 11 of the Baruipur Municipality and dumped in the nearby bushes and overgrown area.

Residents claimed that the statue of Vidyasagar was installed at the park on September 26, 2020. However, the condition in which it was found has raised questions over the municipality’s maintenance and monitoring of the park.

More significantly, the Baruipur Sub-Divisional Officer’s office and the municipality are located close to the site. Residents are now questioning how a statue inside a park could remain abandoned in the bushes despite the location being so close to key administrative offices.

Locals demand probe into statue removal

Locals have demanded an investigation into who removed the statue, why it was removed and whether permission was obtained from the municipality before shifting it.

Residents have also demanded that the statue be immediately recovered and reinstalled at an appropriate location, while a probe is conducted into the incident. Meanwhile, Baruipur Municipality chairman Shakti Ray Chowdhury said he had no knowledge of the incident.
