Three workers were killed on Thursday when the roof of an under-construction church collapsed in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore district. The accident occurred in Mandi Krishnapuram near Katpadi. The workers were pouring concrete for the church roof when the slab collapsed.
Eleven workers were injured in the accident. They were sent to Vellore Government Medical College Hospital, Christian Medical College Hospital, and a hospital in Chittoor in neighboring Andhra Pradesh.
Police said that the building was being constructed for the Church of South India. The 20-foot-high steel scaffolding and support framework suddenly collapsed, trapping the workers under heavy concrete and debris.
Following the accident, a team from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) also reached the site from Arakkonam and, along with the district administration, police, and fire department, rescued the workers trapped under the debris.

A scaffold nearly 20 feet high had been erected for the church roof.
The bodies of 3 workers were recovered from the debris, while 11 workers were rescued immediately.
The workers were pulled out of the debris and given first aid in an ambulance before being sent to the hospital.
Late Thursday night, an NDRF team arrived with a dog squad to search for people trapped under the debris.
Committee to be formed to investigate the accident
According to the Vellore District Collector, the condition of eight injured workers is stable. An inquiry committee will be formed to determine the cause of the accident. It will also be ascertained whether the builder had obtained all the necessary approvals and building permits to construct the church.
