Top Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Zakir Ahmad Ganai was killed in an encounter with security forces in Shopian. Security forces recovered his body on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The Army had launched the anti-terror operation on Saturday. Two terrorists were reported killed the same day, but Ganai’s body was recovered five days later.<\/p>\n
Ganai was among the 14 terrorists identified by intelligence agencies after the 2025 Pahalgam attack. The operation was jointly carried out by the Police’s Special Operations Group (SOG), the Army’s Rashtriya Rifles (RR), and the Central Reserve Police Force.<\/p>\n

Operation against terrorists enters fifth day<\/strong><\/p>\n
A search operation was launched in the Chanapora area on Saturday evening after intelligence inputs suggested that terrorists were hiding there.<\/p>\n
The operation involves the Army’s 44 RR, 20 RR, 34 RR, 55 RR and 3 Para units, the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s Special Operations Group (SOG), and the CRPF’s 14 and 178 battalions.<\/p>\n
The Army’s specialised anti-terror unit, Victor Force, deployed additional troops to seal all possible escape routes through the dense orchards. Lighting arrangements were also made in the area to aid the operation. Security forces have been conducting continuous search operations in the villages and surrounding areas for the past several days.<\/p>\n
Zakir was a resident of Kulgam<\/strong><\/p>\n
According to sources, Zakir was a resident of Matlahama in Kulgam. He had been active in South Kashmir and the Pir Panjal region since 2023. His name was linked to several Pakistan-backed terror attacks.<\/p>\n
In October 2025, an NIA court issued a notice against him. More recently, his name also surfaced during the investigation into the April 2026 Pahalgam terror attack. After the Pahalgam attack, security agencies released a list of 14 terrorists in Kashmir, and their houses were demolished.<\/p>\n
According to security records, Zakir had been associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) since 2024, while Latif joined the terror outfit last year.<\/p>\n

If Zakir Gani’s death is officially confirmed, he will become the ninth terrorist eliminated by security forces from the list of 14 local terrorists. So far, nine of them, including Zakir, have been killed. Six terrorists were neutralised during encounters in Shopian and Pulwama in May 2025.<\/p>\n
