The farmers’ protest on Hoshangabad Road in Bhopal is turning into a story of struggle not only for farmers but also for their families. On Tuesday night, two Gen Z sisters studying in Bhopal reached the protest site with home-cooked food for their farmer father, who has been part of the protest for the past three days.<\/p>\n

The sisters said they have seen their father’s struggles since childhood and believe farmers never get the full value of their hard work. “If farmers don’t farm, what will the country eat?” they asked.<\/p>\n

At the protest, one farmer spoke about being unable to pay his children’s school fees, another said he would continue despite illness, while a farmer’s wife told her husband to return home only after their demands were met.<\/p>\n

One farmer said, “If two or four farmers lose their lives fighting for their rights, it doesn’t matter to us. Even if the government shoots us, we will not back down.”<\/p>\n

Farmers in Madhya Pradesh are protesting their demands. The Kisan Kranti Padyatra (farmers’ revolution foot march) began on Monday from Barkheda in Narmadapuram district.<\/p>\n

The march reached Bhopal on Tuesday evening, passing through Obedullaganj, Mandideep, and 11 Mile. Around 2,000 farmers remained stationed on Hoshangabad Road late into the night.<\/p>\n

Farmers have claimed they will march towards the Chief Minister’s residence on Wednesday. They have arrived in Bhopal demanding 100% government procurement of moong (green gram) and improvement in the fertiliser distribution system. Farmer leaders state that they will stage a sit-in protest in front of the Chief Minister’s residence and will not return until their demands are met.<\/p>\n

Gen Z daughters arrive from Katara hills with food for father<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pragati Patel and Prakriti Patel from Katara Hills arrived late at night at the protest site with food for their father. Both study in Bhopal. Pragati is an MBA student.<\/p>\n

Pragati said- “Dad has been in the protest for three days, so we have brought food for him. We have seen his struggle since childhood. Farmers work so hard, yet they don’t get the full value for their labor. If farmers don’t farm, what will the country eat?”<\/p>\n

On the presence of the police and potential action, she said that being afraid in the fight for one’s rights will achieve nothing. If we ourselves hold our father back, who will fight his battle? Farmers are demanding their rights.<\/p>\n

Wife said – Don’t return empty-handed this time<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hardia farmer Ashok Gurjar said that this time, to prepare the moong crop, he worked day and night in intense heat. Working in the field at 45-46 degree Celsius, his skin was scorched, but the government is not ready to buy the entire produce. In this anger, he has reached Bhopal to join the protest.<\/p>\n

Ashok said that when he left home, his family did not stop him, but rather encouraged him to stay firm in the protest. He said, “My wife clearly told me to return home only after getting our demands met, otherwise don’t come back. She said that we will manage to live somehow, but don’t return empty-handed this time.”<\/p>\n

Ashok said that even while living in the village, farmers are struggling with an economic crisis. There is a loss of 20 to 25 thousand rupees per acre. E-tokens for fertilizer, limited slots for moong procurement, and power cuts have increased the difficulties for farmers.<\/p>\n

When asked about lathi-charge or action, Ashok said, “What is there to fear? If we stay in the village, we will starve anyway. If two or four farmers lose their lives fighting for their rights, it doesn’t matter to us. Even if the government shoots us, we will not back down. We will only return after getting a guarantee of 100 percent moong procurement.”<\/p>\n

Farmer Manish Patel, who came from Harda, expressed his displeasure against Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav. In conversation, he said, “I have never seen such a Chief Minister till date.<\/p>\n

This is the most third-class Chief Minister. Shivraj was better than him.” He said that farmers have come to Bhopal not to meet the Chief Minister, but to get their demands fulfilled.<\/p>\n

He claimed that farmers are not afraid of lathi-charge or action and will not back down. Manish said that farmers have been troubled by slots, OTPs, and limited procurement for many years. According to him, farmers have now entered the field to fight a decisive battle.<\/p>\n

Could not pay children’s fees, bus driver refused to let them sit<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brijesh Jat, a farmer from Harda, said that he invested all his wheat earnings in moong cultivation, but the government’s procurement limit ruined the entire calculation. He said, “We haven’t been able to pay the children’s school fees for two months. The school bus drivers refused to let the children sit on the bus.”<\/p>\n

“It was also clearly stated by the school that if the fees are not paid, take the children home.” Brijesh said that farmers have walked 32 kilometers to reach Bhopal, but no arrangements for drinking water were found on the way.<\/p>\n

Father’s operation, self back pain… still joined the protest<\/strong><\/p>\n

Deepak Patware, a farmer from Harda, joined the protest directly eight days after his father’s knee replacement surgery. Despite a severe back problem, he is walking with a belt. He said that he has about 200 quintals of moong, but the government is buying only a limited portion of it.<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cBoth children study in a private school, I haven’t been able to pay the fees for several months. I have left home with only this assurance that this time I will return only after ensuring 100 percent moong procurement.\u201d<\/p>\n

Farmers participating in the Bhopal march have arrived prepared for a long struggle. They have brought seven days’ worth of ration and water in their tractor-trolleys. Many farmers have also brought Dal-Bati with them. Farmers say that the protest will continue until their demands are met.<\/p>\n

19 farmer organisations participating in the protest<\/strong><\/p>\n

Under the leadership of the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha, 19 farmer organisations of the state are participating in the movement. The Kisan Kranti Padyatra, which started from Barkheda on Monday, reached Bhopal on Tuesday via Obedullaganj, Mandideep, and 11 Mile.<\/p>\n

Police tried to stop the farmers at several places along the way, but they removed the barricades and continued to move forward. Now the farmers have marched towards the Chief Minister’s residence.<\/p>\n
