Where did BJP finally lose the election? Was the reason just changing the ticket, or was there a lapse in organization and election strategy as well; let’s understand in today’s explainer.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Question 1: How did Congress win, and where did BJP finally lose?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Answer- <\/strong><\/span>Local political equations, candidate selection, organizational strategy, and vote fragmentation all together determined the direction of the Datia election. Among these, five factors were most important.<\/p>\n

1. Congress entered the fray to save an already won seat.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This by-election was not about saving BJP’s seat, but about snatching a seat from Congress. In 2023, Congress’s Rajendra Bharti had defeated BJP’s veteran leader Narottam Mishra by 7,742 votes.<\/p>\n

According to political analyst Amitabh Tiwari, in such by-elections, the party that already holds the seat usually has an advantage. This means Congress was in a relatively stronger position from the start.<\/p>\n

2. Congress fielded the right candidate at the right time<\/strong><\/p>\n

Congress nominated Ghanshyam Singh ‘Kunwar Sahab’ as its candidate. There had been a long-standing demand at the local level to give him the ticket. The party finally put its trust in the same face who already had acceptance among workers and supporters.<\/p>\n

3. BJP failed to manage discontent after changing the ticket<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to local senior journalist Ravi Thakur, even though officials associated with Narottam Mishra’s organization remained with the BJP, many of his supporters could not show the same level of activity in the election as before.<\/p>\n

A glimpse of this was also seen at Narottam Mishra’s booth number-121, where Congress got more votes than BJP. Although the conclusion of the entire election cannot be drawn from just one booth, it is being considered a sign of local discontent.<\/p>\n

State Congress President Jitu Patwari continuously held meetings in villages and wards. On the other hand, BJP fielded many big leaders for campaigning, but their expected impact was not seen at the local level. The Chief Minister’s roadshow also could not create the atmosphere that BJP had hoped for.<\/p>\n

5. Azad Samaj Party spoiled the equations<\/strong><\/p>\n

Damodar Yadav of Azad Samaj Party received 22,527 votes. Initially, it was believed that he would only cut into Congress’s Dalit votes, but the results and local assessment painted a different picture.<\/p>\n

Damodar Yadav not only influenced some young votes from the Jatav community of Congress but also attracted some votes from communities like Pal-Kushwaha away from the BJP. This means his presence made the contest triangular instead of a one-sided vote split.<\/p>\n

Ravi Thakur’s assessment is that if another Dalit face from the Azad Samaj Party had been in the fray and received similar support, the BJP’s chances of winning could have increased further. In other words, Damodar Yadav’s candidacy proved to be a factor that changed the arithmetic of both parties’ traditional vote banks.<\/p>\n

The Chief Minister said that Datia was already a Congress seat and it remained with Congress this time too, meaning no seat was snatched from BJP.<\/span><\/p>\n

  • At Booth Number-121, Congress candidate Ghanshyam Singh received 291 votes, while BJP’s Ashutosh Tiwari received 264 votes. Although the entire election cannot be concluded based on just one booth, local political experts consider this one of the signs of the atmosphere created after changing the ticket.<\/li>\n
  • Political analyst Amitabh says that the impact of any big leader is not just from their own votes, but from their entire ‘influencer network’. That is, local workers, influential supporters, and those people who create an atmosphere for the party from the booth to the village during elections. According to him, after changing the ticket, the BJP could not take this network into confidence in time.<\/li>\n
  • Political analyst Rashid Kidwai also considers this an unusual situation for the BJP. According to him, first the ticket being decided, then a controversy arising, and finally changing it – such a situation is rarely seen in the BJP.     • After the defeat, State President Hemant Khandelwal also said- The party humbly accepts the people’s mandate, and a detailed review of the election results will be conducted. He also added that discipline is paramount in BJP, no worker or office-bearer is bigger than the organization- if anyone is found guilty in the review, organizational action will be taken.<\/li>\n
    • According to Amitabh Tiwari, if the party cuts the ticket of a big and influential leader, it is not enough to just declare a new candidate. The supporters of the old leader, local influential workers, and key figures of the organization also need to be taken into confidence beforehand. BJP could not strike this balance in Datia in time, the effect of which was seen in the election results.<\/li>\n
    • Ravi Thakur believes that in the future, BJP will have to adopt a strategy of respectful adjustment in such cases. If it is necessary to cut the ticket of a senior leader, then he should be kept along by giving him another important responsibility in the organization or government.
