Fresh speculation over a possible alliance between the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged after SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Parliament House in New Delhi on Friday.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The meeting comes with around four to five months left for the Punjab Assembly elections. Political observers believe the interaction between the two senior leaders could pave the way for the revival of the Akali-BJP alliance.<\/p>\n

Kejriwal takes swipe<\/strong><\/p>\n

Reacting to the meeting, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal took a jibe at the two parties, quoting a popular Bollywood lyric:<\/p>\n

Sukhbir Badal hits back<\/strong><\/p>\n

Responding to Kejriwal’s remarks, Sukhbir Badal accused the AAP government of failing to deliver on its promises.<\/p>\n

He said AAP had claimed before the 2022 Assembly elections that it would immediately stop Punjab’s alleged \u20b920,000-crore illegal mining business. Referring to a recent order by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), Badal alleged that the ruling proved AAP’s guarantees had failed.<\/p>\n

Congress says reunion was expected<\/strong><\/p>\n

Leader of Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa said he was not surprised by the meeting.<\/p>\n

“I always believed they would come together. However, nothing will change. I knew the broken alliance would reunite, but it will remain broken,” he said.<\/p>\n

Akali-BJP alliance ruled Punjab for three terms<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Akali Dal and BJP formed their alliance in 1996, which lasted for nearly 25 years, making it one of Punjab’s most successful political partnerships.<\/p>\n

The alliance formed its first government in 1997 and returned to power with clear majorities in 2007 and 2012.<\/p>\n

Former Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, father of Sukhbir Badal, often described the alliance as a relationship like “nail and skin”\u2014an inseparable bond in Punjabi culture.<\/p>\n

Why the alliance succeeded<\/strong><\/p>\n

Political analyst Pawandeep Sharma said the alliance’s success was built on three key factors:<\/p>\n

  • Complementary vote banks: The Akali Dal enjoyed strong support in rural and Sikh-majority regions, while the BJP had a solid base among urban Hindu voters.<\/li>\n
  • Effective seat-sharing: Under the arrangement, the Akali Dal contested 94 Assembly seats, while the BJP fought 23, allowing both parties to focus on their traditional strongholds without splitting votes.<\/li>\n
  • Historic electoral performance: The alliance won 68 seats in 2012, becoming the first political alliance in Punjab’s history to retain power for a second consecutive term.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n

    Split weakened both parties<\/strong><\/p>\n

    The alliance ended in 2020, leading both parties to contest the 2022 Assembly elections separately. As a result, their vote share was divided, and both were reduced to single-digit seat tallies.<\/p>\n

    Political impact of the split<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Political expert Dr Krishna Kumar Rattu said the breakup significantly altered Punjab’s political landscape.<\/p>\n

    AAP emerged as the biggest beneficiary<\/strong><\/p>\n

    According to Rattu, the collapse of the traditional Akali-BJP alliance enabled AAP to transform itself from a third alternative into the state’s ruling party.<\/p>\n

    Congress lost anti-incumbency advantage<\/p>\n

    He said the anti-Akali vote that had helped Congress win power in 2017 was split in 2022, while AAP’s rise pushed Congress out of the principal contest.<\/p>\n

    Opposition votes were divided<\/strong><\/p>\n

    With the BJP and Akali Dal contesting separately, anti-government votes fragmented. AAP capitalised on the momentum created by the farmers’ movement and public demand for political change.<\/p>\n

    A renewed alliance could reshape 2027 contest<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Rattu said that if the BJP and Akali Dal reunite for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, both AAP and Congress could face a much tougher and more direct electoral challenge.<\/p>\n
