<\/p>\n The proposal has been submitted to the White House\u2019s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for review and has not yet been implemented. If approved, the change could make it significantly harder for H-1B visa holders to remain in the US after losing their jobs.<\/p>\n According to the available data, the proposed move could affect around 500,000 Indian nationals working in the US on H-1B visas.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Jaishankar had also raised the issue<\/strong><\/span> External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar raised this matter with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in May this year. Rubio had acknowledged that there could be some difficulties and tensions during changes to the new immigration system.<\/p>\n However, Rubio had said that the US is trying to make the immigration system more effective, and in the long run it will benefit all parties. Rubio had also said that this step has not been taken specifically to target India.<\/p>\n According to him, America has been grappling with the problem of illegal immigrants on a large scale in the past few years. More than 2 crore people entered America illegally, and these changes are being made to deal with that very challenge.<\/p>\n Immigrants living in US for 7 years will get Green Card<\/strong><\/span> Lakhs of people, including Indian H-1B visa holders living in the US, may get a new opportunity to obtain a Green Card.<\/p>\n A bill has been introduced in the US Senate that proposes to allow people who have been continuously residing in America for the past 7 years to apply for a Green Card.<\/p>\n A Green Card is an official document that permits permanent residence and work in America. It is officially called a Permanent Resident Card.<\/p>\n How does the 60-day H-1B grace period work?<\/strong><\/span> If you lose your job, you do not have to leave the US immediately<\/strong><\/p>\n Under current rules, an H-1B worker who loses their job can remain in the United States for up to 60 days while looking for new employment or taking steps to maintain their immigration status.<\/p>\n What if you find a new job within 60 days?<\/strong><\/p>\n The worker can look for employment with another company during the grace period. The new employer can file an H-1B petition on their behalf. In certain circumstances, the worker can begin employment with the new company once the petition has been properly filed, without waiting for it to be approved.<\/p>\n What if you do not find a new job?<\/strong><\/p>\n Finding another H-1B job is not the only option. Depending on their circumstances, workers may be able to apply to change to another immigration status, such as dependent or visitor status.
