Many times he would suddenly fall silent after saying half a thing to someone. The other person would keep wondering what the matter was. Then after some time Shammi Kapoor would laugh and tell that he was joking.<\/p>\n He even remembered the camera angle<\/strong><\/p>\n The child within him had not grown up with age. He remained conscious even in front of the camera. He was aware of which angle the camera was viewing him from and how his face would appear in the frame.<\/p>\n He loved good food and also loved feeding his friends. Hosting feasts for friends at home was part of his nature. Despite stardom, this style of living life to the fullest remained until his final days.<\/p>\n A Special Relationship with Kashmir<\/strong><\/p>\n The relationship between Shammi Kapoor and Kashmir holds a special place in the memories of Hindi cinema. Films like ‘Junglee’, ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’ and ‘Janwar’ brought the beauty of Kashmir to audiences across the country. The valleys seen in songs like ‘Ye Chand Sa Roshan Chehra’, ‘Kashmir Ki Kali Hoon Main’ and ‘Mere Yaar Shabba Khair’ and Shammi Kapoor’s carefree style captured the hearts of viewers.<\/p>\n Contribution to Kashmir’s Tourism as Well<\/strong><\/p>\n Raza Murad believes that Shammi Kapoor’s films had a major contribution in popularizing Kashmir’s tourism. He used to say that there should be a road, garden or neighborhood named after Shammi Kapoor there. He wished that if Kashmir Airport had also been named after Shammi Kapoor, it would have been a wonderful tribute to his contribution.<\/p>\n For Raza, Shammi Kapoor’s entire personality was encapsulated in one thing – either be the best or be different. Shammi Kapoor was certainly the most different.<\/p>\n Meeting Geeta Bali and Four Months of Love<\/strong><\/p>\n A beautiful chapter of Shammi Kapoor’s personal life was connected to actress Geeta Bali. The two met in the film environment. They came close during the shooting of ‘Rangeeli Raatein’.<\/p>\n Shammi Kapoor proposed marriage to Geeta Bali, but she didn’t say yes immediately. Both of them discussed this for about four months. Then one night Geeta Bali said that if they had to get married, it had to be now.<\/p>\n Reached the temple at midnight, priest said – God has gone to sleep<\/strong><\/p>\n Both reached Banganga temple with the help of their friend Johnny Walker and producer Hari Walia. It was quite late at night. The priest told them that God has gone to sleep, come around four in the morning. Both returned and reached the temple again in the morning. After that the marriage took place.<\/p>\n Filled the parting with lipstick<\/strong><\/p>\n The simplicity of this wedding was like Shammi-Geeta’s relationship. Geeta Bali didn’t have vermillion. She took out lipstick from her purse and asked Shammi Kapoor to fill her parting with that only. This marriage that took place in 1955 resulted in two children. About ten years later, Geeta Bali’s untimely death broke this relationship forever.<\/p>\n Shammi was shattered after Geeta’s passing<\/strong><\/p>\n After Geeta Bali’s death in 1965, a difficult period began in Shammi Kapoor’s life. Neela Devi had told in an interview to Vicky Lalwani that he could not come out of this shock for a long time. For about six months, he stayed at Raj Kapoor’s house. Krishna Kapoor helped in taking care of his children.<\/p>\n Turned to alcohol and cigarettes in pain<\/strong><\/p>\n According to Neela Devi, during this period Shammi Kapoor took refuge in alcohol and cigarettes. At one time, he used to smoke about 100 cigarettes a day and consumed a lot of alcohol. The memory of Geeta Bali never left his life.<\/p>\n 21 days away from alcohol in memory of Geeta<\/strong><\/p>\n Neela Devi revealed that every year from January 1 to January 21, Shammi Kapoor would not touch alcohol. January 21 was Geeta Bali’s death anniversary. This 21-day abstinence was his way of remembering Geeta. Gradually, he reduced alcohol and later almost gave it up.<\/p>\n Neela Devi belongs to the royal family of Bhavnagar, Gujarat.<\/span><\/p>\n Midnight Phone Call and Four Hours of Conversation<\/strong><\/p>\n After Geeta Bali’s demise, Neela Devi came into Shammi Kapoor’s life. This relationship also began in Shammi Kapoor’s style. One night, Shammi Kapoor called Neela Devi. First, her sister picked up the phone and recognizing the voice, hung up. Shammi Kapoor said he needed to talk to Neela right away. After that, both of them talked for about four-five hours.<\/p>\n The Story of an Entire Life Told in One Night<\/strong><\/p>\n Shammi Kapoor narrated the story of his life to Neela Devi – childhood, family, relationships, Geeta Bali, children, and life after Geeta’s demise. He shared the good and bad aspects of his life without hiding anything. Then he clearly said that he wanted to marry her and would come the next day to take her to Banganga.<\/p>\n Neela Devi said that the marriage would only happen in the presence of family. Shammi Kapoor agreed to this. Krishna Kapoor already liked Neela Devi and had advised Shammi Kapoor to marry her.<\/p>\n Sudden Marriage on 27 January 1969<\/strong><\/p>\n On 27 January 1969, Shammi Kapoor and Neela Devi got married. The preparations were so sudden that Neela Devi’s clothes were arranged later. Initially, Krishna Kapoor thought Shammi was joking. But when he made it clear that he was really going to get married, the family got ready.<\/p>\n A New Relationship in the Kapoor Family<\/strong><\/p>\n Just a few days after the wedding, Ritu Nanda’s grand wedding was scheduled. This incident also increased Kanchan’s affection for Neela Devi.<\/p>\n People had said the relationship wouldn’t last even two months<\/strong><\/p>\n Initially, many people didn’t have faith in Shammi Kapoor and Neela Devi’s marriage. There was talk among journalists and people around that this relationship wouldn’t last even two months. But Shammi Kapoor and Neela Devi proved this notion wrong. Their companionship lasted more than four decades.<\/p>\n Fun-loving on screen, short-tempered in real life<\/strong><\/p>\n Neela Devi says that Shammi Kapoor, who always appeared cheerful on screen, was also shy in real life. His temper was quick, though it didn’t last long. Sometimes his anger would increase after drinking alcohol. The next day when he couldn’t remember the entire incident, he would ask Neela Devi what had happened the previous night. After hearing everything, he would feel remorse about his behavior and apologize.<\/p>\n ‘Yahoo’ – Such a Connection That People Thought He Was the Owner<\/strong><\/p>\n The word ‘Yahoo’ became so deeply associated with Shammi Kapoor’s name that at one point, people genuinely started believing he was the owner of the ‘Yahoo’ company. Shammi Kapoor had mentioned in an interview that even his nephew Randhir Kapoor asked him why he never told anyone that ‘Yahoo’ was his company.<\/p>\n Shammi had jokingly replied that if ‘Yahoo’ were his company, he wouldn’t be sitting in India but would be in America.<\/p>\n Even Randhir Kapoor Got Confused<\/strong><\/p>\n This anecdote shows how strong Shammi Kapoor’s ‘Yahoo’ identity had become. The ‘Yahoo’ song from his film ‘Junglee’ and his jumping and dancing style became so popular that people began to consider this word as his identity. When Yahoo was launched in India, the company’s co-founder Jerry Yang came to India. Shammi Kapoor was also invited to the event. As soon as he arrived, the famous ‘Yahoo’ song was played.<\/p>\n In Dance, No Steps – Just Following the Music<\/strong><\/p>\n Watching Shammi Kapoor dance, it seemed he wasn’t doing choreography, but rather living the music. His dance was largely extemporaneous. Instead of repeating fixed steps exactly, he would let his body move naturally with the music.<\/p>\n In that era, a hero dancing so openly was not common. This anecdote shows that no matter how big the stardom, for Shammi Kapoor, respecting the fellow artist was more important than that.<\/p>\n The Gathering Continued from Set to Airplane<\/strong><\/p>\n During the shooting of ‘Batwara’, Shammi Kapoor enjoyed playing badminton with Dharmendra and other artists. Even after the shooting ended, his fun didn’t stop on the return flight. In that era, alcohol was permitted on flights. The artists were sitting with their respective brands.<\/p>\n A Musical Gathering Started on the Flight<\/strong><\/p>\n Vinod Khanna started singing and Shammi Kapoor also joined in. Arun Bakshi also sang along. In no time, a gathering started on the plane. Some foreign passengers also began enjoying this atmosphere. This anecdote shows that for Shammi Kapoor, life was a celebration even after shooting.<\/p>\n From Film Star to Early Internet Enthusiasts<\/strong><\/p>\n One aspect of Shammi Kapoor’s life sets him apart from other stars of his era – his passion for technology. When the internet was new in India and most people were not even familiar with computers, Shammi Kapoor was learning computers.<\/p>\n Shammi Kapoor joined the Internet Users Community of India and was active in creating the Kapoor family website.<\/span><\/p>\n Life Changed by Macintosh<\/strong><\/p>\n He bought a Macintosh computer in the early days. He didn’t just want to use technology, but tried to understand it. According to Neela Devi, the computer brought a big change in his life. During this period, he also quit smoking. On one hand, he was a popular film star of the old generation, on the other hand, he was among the early adopters of the new digital world.<\/p>\n Illness weakened the body, not the spirit<\/strong><\/p>\n In 2003, Shammi Kapoor’s lung condition became critical. According to Neela Devi, he remained on a ventilator at Breach Candy Hospital for about a month. During treatment, the effects of steroids and antibiotics also affected his kidneys and dialysis began.<\/p>\n Didn’t stop traveling despite dialysis<\/strong><\/p>\n Raza Murad revealed that despite problems with both kidneys, the smile never disappeared from Shammi Kapoor’s face. His attitude was – if treatment has to be done, then it has to be done, and if life has to be lived, then it has to be lived. Despite dialysis, he did not stop traveling the world. With Neela Devi, he made trips to Switzerland, London, and even New York.<\/p>\n Life was important besides the hospital<\/strong><\/p>\n Later, when dialysis became three times a week, weakness increased and travel became difficult. But apart from hospital days, eating out remained a part of his life on other days. For many years, after getting ready in the morning, he would take Neela Devi to eat at some good hotel or restaurant.<\/p>\n Driving was a feeling of freedom<\/strong><\/p>\n Shammi Kapoor had a tremendous passion for driving. One day he told Neela Devi that he was just going to have coffee and would return soon. But he didn’t return for quite a while. When called, it was found that he had driven himself and reached Khandala.<\/p>\n ‘If I can’t drive, what’s the point of living’<\/strong><\/p>\n For him, driving was not just a hobby, but a feeling of freedom. When due to illness he was no longer in a condition to drive himself, he said to Neela Devi – “When I can’t drive, what’s the point of living?”<\/p>\n Neela Devi consoled him. This statement brings forth that aspect of his life in which independence and staying active were essential for him.<\/p>\n Wheelchair came, but life didn’t stop<\/strong><\/p>\n Even after being confined to a wheelchair, he didn’t imprison himself at home. He would meet people, go out and try to visit other patients in the hospital. The illness was stopping his body, but not his will to live life.<\/p>\n Spiritual transformation amid illness<\/strong><\/p>\n Shammi Kapoor was not very serious about gurus and spirituality initially. Neela Devi’s mother had given him a picture of Mahavatar Babaji and asked him to chant ‘Om Namah Shivaya’. He did it as a mark of respect. About two years later, he met Guruji. According to Neela Devi, after this meeting, a spiritual transformation came into his life.<\/p>\n Shammi used to play harmonium in bhajans<\/strong><\/p>\n The family went on pilgrimages with Guruji to places like Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Dwarka and Somnath. During bhajan-kirtan, Shammi Kapoor would sing while playing the harmonium. Guruji did not order him to stay away from films or alcohol. According to Neela Devi, he only showed love and the spiritual path. This is what impressed Shammi Kapoor the most.<\/p>\n Did not hesitate to transition from hero to character actor<\/strong><\/p>\n As Shammi Kapoor aged and started getting character roles, some people said that such a big star shouldn’t do such roles. Shammi Kapoor consulted Neela Devi. Her response was- “You are an actor, an actor can play any character.” Shammi Kapoor liked this advice.<\/p>\n Shammi Kapoor’s last film was ‘Rockstar’ (2011), in which he worked with Ranbir Kapoor. This film was released after his death.<\/span><\/p>\n Acting was bigger than stardom<\/strong><\/p>\n He continued to accept character roles. He believed that just sitting at home drinking alcohol and eating couldn’t be his life. If work is available, one should work. This was the reason why despite age and illness, he didn’t separate himself from work.<\/p>\n Didn’t Stop Singing Even While Going to the Hospital<\/strong><\/p>\n According to Neela Devi, once during Christmas, Shammi Kapoor’s health suddenly deteriorated in Pune. He was admitted to the hospital and the next day was brought to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital by ambulance. Even while reaching the hospital and heading towards the ICU, he started singing.<\/p>\n Illness Reached the Body, Not the Artist<\/strong><\/p>\n This was the same Shammi Kapoor who made audiences laugh, dance, and filled them with his energy throughout his life. Illness certainly weakened his body, but couldn’t destroy the artist within him. This was the greatest lesson of his life – no matter how difficult the circumstances, one should never stop living life.<\/p>\n Shammi Kapoor passed away on August 14, 2011.<\/span><\/p>\n Last wish fulfilled in Kashmir<\/strong><\/p>\n Kashmir was close to Shammi Kapoor’s heart. His wish was that after his death, his ashes should be immersed in Dal Lake. This wish of his was fulfilled.
