Kolkata\/New Delhi<\/span>9 minutes ago<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n BJP MLA and Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay\u2019s descendant Sumitro Chatterjee has asked Sonia Gandhi to issue an unconditional apology.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n He alleged that Sonia had gestured to stop the singing of \u2018Vande Mataram\u2019 at the Congress headquarters on Independence Day.<\/p>\n Chatterjee claimed there was discomfort over singing the full version of \u2018Vande Mataram\u2019 and that repeated attempts were made to stop it.<\/p>\n In a letter to Sonia Gandhi, Chatterjee, the BJP MLA from Naihati, described himself as an ordinary citizen, a patriot and a direct descendant of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n He said the incident had left him deeply hurt, angry and upset.<\/p>\n First, watch the video clip from Congress headquarters<\/strong><\/p>\n Chatterjee said – Congress repeated a historic mistake<\/strong><\/p>\n Chatterjee wrote that the incident on 15 August was not only unfortunate but also amounted to \u201cshamelessly repeating a historic mistake\u201d.<\/p>\n He referred to Sri Aurobindo\u2019s description of \u2018Vande Mataram\u2019 as a mantra that inspired the country towards the \u201creligion of patriotism\u201d.<\/p>\n He said the alleged reluctance to sing the complete song on the soil of independent India was an insult to the sacrifices of freedom fighters such as Khudiram Bose.<\/p>\n Enumerated the role of Vande Mataram in the freedom struggle<\/strong><\/p>\n Chatterjee said \u2018Vande Mataram\u2019 played an important role in India\u2019s freedom struggle. He pointed out that Sarala Devi Chaudhurani recited it at the 1905 Banaras session of the Congress.<\/p>\n He said supporters of Bal Gangadhar Tilak sang \u2018Vande Mataram\u2019 during his sedition trial in 1909. In 1938, nationalist students at Osmania University in Hyderabad also used it as a slogan despite restrictions imposed by the Nizam.<\/p>\n Chatterjee also referred to Rabindranath Tagore singing \u2018Vande Mataram\u2019 at the 1896 Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress.<\/p>\n Questioned Congress’s ‘double standards’<\/strong><\/p>\n Chatterjee alleged that Congress\u2019s \u201cdouble standards\u201d were not new. He said the party shortened the song in October 1937 after objections from Muhammad Ali Jinnah.<\/p>\n He claimed that the same compromise was once again visible in the Congress\u2019s current conduct.<\/p>\n Chatterjee also referred to the slogan used by Chhatra Parishad, the student organisation of the West Bengal Congress.<\/p>\n He said the group uses the slogan, \u2018Mantra Moder Sanjivan, Vande Mataram\u2019, and questioned why the party\u2019s top leadership was uncomfortable with the same song.<\/p>\n Vande Mataram is not the property of any one party<\/strong><\/p>\n Chatterjee said \u2018Vande Mataram\u2019 does not belong to any one political party. He described it as a sacred national symbol rooted in the country\u2019s collective memory, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay\u2019s legacy and the sacrifices of freedom fighters.<\/p>\n He said respecting the song means respecting the history of India\u2019s freedom struggle.
