The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has changed the Chief Guest for its convocation ceremony. Earlier, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Suryakant was made the chief guest for the ceremony. Now, Dr CS Pramesh, Director of Tata Memorial Hospital, will be the chief guest in his place.<\/p>\n

Earlier, about 450 students from the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) University in Hyderabad had protested against CJI Suryakant being made the chief guest at the convocation ceremony.<\/p>\n

The ceremony was earlier scheduled for August 2<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The TISS convocation ceremony was earlier scheduled for August 2, but it was suddenly postponed two days before the event. Now, the ceremony will be held on August 22. Students and officials had cited concerns related to potential protests and security arrangements regarding the CJI’s visit.<\/p>\n

However, TISS has not clarified whether Dr. C.S. Pramesh was chosen after the CJI withdrew from the chief guest position, or if the institute itself made this change due to security concerns. The institute has not yet responded on this matter.<\/p>\n

NALSAR students had objected to the CJI being made the chief guest, citing the NEET controversy and recent incidents during protests at Jantar Mantar.<\/p>\n

A group of students from the 2026 batch had written a letter to the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, faculty members, and other members of the administration. In it, they appealed to reconsider the decision to invite the Chief Justice of India as the chief guest.<\/p>\n

Students raised issues of constitutional accountability and academic freedom<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

According to the students’ letter, their protest is regarding the incidents that occurred during the hearing of petitions related to protests in the Supreme Court. Students say that constitutional accountability and academic freedom are important. In the current situation, making CJI Suryakant the chief guest would not be in line with these values.<\/p>\n

On this basis, students have demanded that the university reconsider its decision to invite the CJI as the chief guest. The protest began with about 70 students from the 2026 graduate batch writing a letter to the VC. By the end of July, about 380 to 450 students from the 2027 to 2031 batches also joined the protest.<\/p>\n
