Authorities have opened all 36 gates of the Gandak Barrage in Bagaha, Bihar, as water levels continue to rise.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:0\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">According to the Central Water Commission (CWC), the flood could cause waves up to three metres high in the Gandak, with the possibility of flash floods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">Eight Bihar districts have been placed on high alert: West Champaran (Bagaha), East Champaran (Motihari), Gopalganj, Saran, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Sitamarhi and Sheohar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary held a meeting with officials and instructed them to remain alert and continuously monitor the situation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:0\"\/><span style=\"font-size:0\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured CM Choudhary of all possible assistance. The incoming water will eventually spread into the Gandak and Kosi river systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\"><strong>300,000-400,000 cusecs of water expected<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">Officials estimate that around 300,000 to 400,000 cusecs of water could enter the Gandak. Villages near the river have been evacuated because of the strong current.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\"><strong>Barrage not at immediate risk, but strong current a concern<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">The Valmikinagar Gandak Barrage is designed to withstand pressure from around 850,000 cusecs of water. The warning level there is 7.30 metres, while the danger mark is 9 metres.<\/li>\n<li>Once the water level rises at Devghat, it could take around 3.5 hours for the water to reach the Gandak Barrage.<\/li>\n<li>All 36 gates of the Gandak Barrage have been opened as a precautionary measure.<\/li>\n<li>In Muzaffarpur, SDMs, BDOs and circle officers visited the area to inspect the condition of embankments and nearby locations.<\/li>\n<li>Authorities are making public announcements in Valmikinagar, asking people to stay away from the river.<\/li>\n<li>Officials are also on alert in the Amour, Baisi and Baisa blocks of Purnia, with public announcements being made.<\/li>\n<li>In Gopalganj, 62 panchayats across six blocks are considered at risk of flooding.
