If Lok Sabha elections were held today, the BJP-led NDA could win 326 of the 543 seats in the Lok Sabha. According to India Today’s ‘Mood of the Nation’ (MOTN) survey, the NDA remains in a strong position. However, signs of a decline in its popularity are also visible.<\/p>\n

If elections were held now, the BJP could win 261 seats. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the NDA won 293 seats. The BJP’s own tally had fallen from 303 to 240 seats.<\/p>\n

26 fewer seats than in the January survey<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The NDA is now in its 12th year. In the previous MOTN survey conducted in January, the NDA was projected to win 352 seats.<\/p>\n

This estimate is 26 seats lower than the previous survey. Compared with the January survey, the INDIA bloc is unlikely to see any significant increase in its seat tally. This survey projects 185 seats for the Congress-led alliance, compared with 182 seats projected in January.<\/p>\n

The India Today Group has been conducting this survey for nearly two decades. It is conducted twice a year-in January and August. The August 2026 survey was conducted by C-Voter.<\/p>\n

In terms of vote share, the NDA is expected to see a marginal decline to 45.1% from 47% in the January MOTN. This is the lowest since the August 2025 survey, which projected a vote share of 46.7%. The NDA received 44% of the votes in the 2024 elections.<\/p>\n

7 states to hold elections in 2027, 22% of voters are Gen Z<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Next year, assembly elections will be held in seven states-Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Goa. Gen Z voters, that is, those aged 18 to 29, could play an important role in these elections.<\/p>\n

There are two major reasons behind this. First, the Gen Z movement in Delhi in July, which sparked a fresh debate about the political inclinations of young people. Second, the surprising results of the by-elections in Bankipur, Bihar, and Datia, Madhya Pradesh, which have intensified discussions about the electoral role of young voters.<\/p>\n

According to political analysts, alongside groups such as women, backward classes, farmers, and Dalits, Gen Z is also emerging as an important voter group in the electoral equation. In these seven poll-bound states, around 22% of voters are between 18 and 29 years old. As a result, the youth vote could change any party’s electoral calculations.<\/p>\n

In the previous elections across the 7 states, 257 seats had a vote margin of 5%<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

In the seven states going to the polls, an analysis of the previous Assembly election results shows that out of a total of 940 seats, 257 seats (27%) were won by a margin of 5% or less.<\/p>\n

In Uttar Pradesh, 131 of the 403 seats were won by a margin of less than 5%. Similarly, the vote margin was less than 5% in 27 of Gujarat’s 182 seats, 24 of Punjab’s 117 seats, 15 of Uttarakhand’s 70 seats, and 14 of Himachal Pradesh’s 68 seats.<\/p>\n
