Kriti responded that festivals are about emotions and traditions, and a woman’s respect for her culture should not be measured by what she wears.<\/p>\n Let’s take a look at Kriti Sanon’s Bollywood journey, her early life, career struggles, National Award win, personal choices and some lesser-known facts about the actress.<\/em><\/p>\n A Delhi girl who never dreamt of Bollywood<\/strong><\/p>\n Kriti Sanon was born on 27 July 1990 in New Delhi. Her father, Rahul Sanon, is a Chartered Accountant, while her mother, Geeta Sanon, has been an Associate Professor at Delhi University. Her younger sister, Nupur Sanon, is also associated with acting and singing.<\/p>\n ‘I was good at studies and never thought of coming into films’: Kriti<\/strong><\/p>\n Kriti completed her schooling at Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram. She then pursued a B.Tech degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Jaypee Institute of Information Technology in Noida.<\/p>\n In an interview with Bollywood Bubble, Kriti had recalled that her childhood was largely focused on academics.<\/p>\n One piece of advice changed her direction<\/strong><\/p>\n After school, she chose engineering and followed what appeared to be a conventional career path. At that stage, there was little indication that she would eventually become one of Bollywood’s leading actresses.<\/p>\n During engineering, someone suggested that Kriti try modelling because of her height. Her first reaction was to refuse, as she did not think she could do it.<\/p>\n Kriti with her family.<\/span><\/p>\n She eventually decided to give modelling a chance.<\/p>\n Her sister took her first pictures<\/strong><\/p>\n Kriti did not have a professional portfolio when she began exploring modelling. Her younger sister, Nupur, took some pictures of her at home.<\/p>\n Kriti later admitted that she still laughs when she looks at those photographs because they were far from a professional portfolio.<\/span><\/p>\n She submitted the pictures for a Fresh Face contest being conducted on a website. The prize was a portfolio shoot with photographer Dabboo Ratnani. Kriti knew that such a photoshoot could be expensive, although she had little understanding of the modelling industry at the time.<\/p>\n She won the contest, received her first modelling contract and gradually found herself moving towards the entertainment industry.<\/p>\n Her first photoshoot ended in tears<\/strong><\/p>\n Her first ramp show was another difficult experience. During the show, the choreographer scolded her in front of around 50 models.<\/span><\/p>\n Standing in front of a camera was not easy for Kriti initially. She did not know how to pose, where to place her hands or how to give expressions.<\/p>\n During her first photoshoot, the photographer simply asked whether it was her first shoot. Kriti interpreted the comment as a sign that she had not performed well.<\/p>\n She went home after the shoot and cried.<\/p>\n Even today, she has said that whenever she feels she has not given 100 per cent, it stays with her for a long time.<\/p>\n Quietly left, sat in an auto and cried throughout the journey<\/strong><\/p>\n Her mother then told her that if she wanted to survive in that world, she would have to become stronger.<\/span><\/p>\n Kriti’s mother also explained that if she broke down every time someone criticised her, it would be difficult to move forward. Kriti took the advice seriously.<\/p>\n She moved to Mumbai and learnt to live independently. This was another major change because she had never lived away from her family.<\/p>\n Alongside auditions, she was also preparing for the GMAT because her family wanted her to have a backup option in case acting did not work out.<\/p>\n ‘I didn’t know where to begin’<\/strong><\/p>\n Coming from outside the film industry, Kriti had no established industry connections. She has recalled not knowing where to start, whom to meet or which projects to choose.<\/p>\n She was a film fan who admired actors such as Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Hrithik Roshan, but she soon realised that being a film fan and understanding the industry were two very different things.<\/p>\n Her modelling agency became an important source of support during this period. It guided her on auditions, roles and when to wait or turn down an opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n Her acting journey began in the South<\/strong><\/p>\n Kriti entered the South Indian film industry before Bollywood. She made her acting debut with the Telugu film 1: Nenokkadine, opposite Mahesh Babu.<\/p>\n She later appeared in Tamil and other South Indian films, including Aadukalam, Mr. Perfect, Veera, Vaanthan Vendran, Mogudu, Gundello Godari, Daruvu and Shadow.<\/p>\n She also worked in the Malayalam film Doubles and the Tamil film Kanchana 2.<\/p>\n The early phase was not easy. Kriti was often limited to glamorous roles and was not satisfied with the kind of work she was receiving.<\/p>\n Bollywood debut with ‘Heropanti’<\/strong><\/p>\n Kriti made her Bollywood debut with Sabbir Khan’s Heropanti, opposite Tiger Shroff.<\/p>\n Her transition to Hindi cinema did not immediately make things easy. She was still considered an outsider and had to prove herself in an industry where established actors and star families already had visibility.<\/p>\n Kriti also faced the perception that models were primarily suited to glamorous roles rather than serious acting.<\/p>\n One of the important turning points in Kriti’s career came with Bareilly Ki Barfi.<\/p>\n She played Bitti Mishra, a small-town girl, and the role helped challenge the perception that she was only suited to glamorous characters.<\/p>\n ‘Mimi’ became a career-defining film<\/strong><\/p>\n Kriti’s biggest transformation came with Mimi.<\/span><\/p>\n She was advised by some people not to take on the role of a mother so early in her career because it could affect her glamorous image. Kriti, however, focused on the story and the character rather than those concerns.<\/p>\n For the role, she gained considerable weight and changed her appearance to portray the character authentically.<\/p>\n Her performance received widespread appreciation and eventually earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress.<\/span><\/p>\n She says rejection made her stronger<\/strong><\/p>\n Kriti has spoken about experiencing self-doubt during her early years. She questioned her appearance, confidence and abilities and sometimes blamed herself when films did not perform well.<\/p>\n The uncertainty was particularly difficult when she didn’t get auditions.<\/p>\n During struggling days, she would call her mother repeatedly and sometimes break down in tears. Her mother’s reassurance and her own determination helped her continue.<\/span><\/p>\n Over time, Kriti says she learnt to see rejection as part of the process rather than as a definition of her ability.<\/p>\n She froze her eggs while preparing for ‘Mimi’<\/strong><\/p>\n Kriti has also spoken openly about a personal decision she made while preparing for Mimi \u2014 freezing her eggs.<\/span><\/p>\n She explained that the procedure can cause bloating and make the body feel heavier. Since she already had to gain weight for Mimi, she felt that it was a practical time to undergo the procedure.<\/p>\n She said she did not want decisions about marriage or motherhood to be dictated by her biological clock or societal expectations.<\/p>\n For Kriti, motherhood should be a personal choice made when a woman feels emotionally and mentally ready, rather than something driven by age or external pressure.<\/p>\n Her views on gender bias in Bollywood<\/strong><\/p>\n Kriti has also spoken about unequal treatment between male and female actors.<\/p>\n In an interview with The Indian Express, she recalled situations where male co-stars received larger vanity vans, bigger hotel rooms and better cars during promotions, while female actors were expected to adjust.<\/p>\n Relationship rumours and personal life<\/strong><\/p>\n Kriti’s personal life has also attracted considerable attention.<\/p>\n Her name has been linked with 9-year-younger businessman Kabir Bahia, with the two being spotted together on several occasions.<\/span><\/p>\n Kriti and Kabir were also seen at Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s concert, while Kriti’s sister Nupur shared Instagram stories from the event.
