The Supreme Court will hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on August 31, which demands that the exact quantity, i.e., the percentage of ethanol, be mentioned on the nozzles of all petrol pumps in the country and on petrol bills.<\/p>\n

According to PTI, a bench of Justice M.M. Sundresh and Justice Prasanna B. Varale will hear this matter. This petition has been filed by Narendra Kumar Goswami.<\/p>\n

Ethanol content must be written on pump nozzles and petrol bills<\/strong><\/p>\n

The petition has requested that the central government and relevant authorities be directed to clearly state the percentage of ethanol blending on every dispensing nozzle at petrol pumps.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Additionally, it has been requested that whenever a customer purchases petrol, the receipt provided to them must mandatorily state the percentage of ethanol blended in that fuel.<\/p>\n

Demand for creating an online compatibility database for vehicles<\/strong><\/p>\n

The petitioner has requested the court that the government should create an official and public online database. This database should have a search facility based on vehicle manufacturer, model, engine type, and year of manufacture. This will allow common citizens to easily know whether their vehicle is compatible with E20 or other ethanol blends.<\/p>\n

Suggestion for an expert committee to investigate the impact of E20 petrol<\/strong><\/p>\n

The petition also demands the formation of an independent expert committee. This committee should include:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Representatives of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas<\/li>\n
  • Representatives of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways<\/li>\n
  • Members of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)<\/li>\n
  • Independent Automobile Engineers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n

    should be included. This committee will issue a public report by examining the actual impact of E20 fuel on vehicles plying on the roads.<\/p>\n

    Impact on mileage, engine life, and the environment will be assessed<\/strong><\/p>\n

    The petition states that this expert committee should study the following aspects and submit a report:<\/p>\n

    • Mileage and Maintenance:<\/strong> The impact of ethanol-blended petrol on a vehicle’s mileage, engine lifespan, and maintenance costs.<\/li>\n
    • Warranty and Insurance:<\/strong> The effect of using ethanol-blended fuel on vehicle warranties and insurance claims.<\/li>\n
    • Environment and Water Consumption:<\/strong> The environmental impact of vehicle emissions and the water consumption involved in ethanol production.<\/li>\n
    • Food Security:<\/strong> The impact of diverting grains and sugarcane for ethanol production on food security and animal feed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n
