Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee\u2019s niece, Brishti Mukherjee, was found hanging at her residence in Rampurhat, Birbhum, on Tuesday afternoon. Her family said she allegedly died by suicide.<\/p>\n

Family cites depression, divorce case stress<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

According to family members, Brishti had been suffering from depression for the past four to five years and was undergoing treatment. She was also reportedly under stress over an ongoing divorce case.<\/p>\n

Name surfaced in school recruitment scam<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Brishti had worked as a Group C staff member at a local school. Her name later surfaced during the investigation into the West Bengal school recruitment scam, following which she lost her government job.<\/p>\n

Investigating agencies had reportedly identified discrepancies in a large number of OMR sheets in the Group C recruitment examination. Brishti was among the candidates whose names came under scrutiny in connection with alleged irregularities in the recruitment process.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday afternoon, Brishti\u2019s body was found hanging from the balcony of her second-floor residence in Kusumba village. A piece of cloth was reportedly used.<\/p>\n

Rampurhat Police reached the spot after receiving the information, recovered the body and sent it to Rampurhat Medical College and Hospital for examination.<\/p>\n

Police are initially suspecting suicide, but the exact circumstances and reason behind her death remain unclear. Rampurhat Police have started an investigation. Brishti was the daughter of Nihar Mukherjee, Mamata Banerjee\u2019s maternal cousin and former Trinamool Congress president of Rampurhat-I block. The Banerjee family\u2019s maternal ancestral home is in Kusumba village.<\/p>\n
