In a case involving the alleged gang rape of a 16-year-old student on a moving sleeper bus in Delhi, police have found crucial evidence during the forensic investigation. According to police sources, fingerprints of the student and both accused were found on the bus. Forensic samples were also collected from the bus seats and steering wheel.<\/p>\n

Police have seized the clothes of driver Kuldeep and conductor Sandeep. The police are now awaiting the DNA report. After that, the investigation will be taken forward and preparations are underway to file the chargesheet soon. Both accused have already been arrested, and the sleeper bus used in the incident has also been seized.<\/p>\n

The incident took place on the night of August 4. The Class 11 student, who is from Mainpuri in Uttar Pradesh, boarded the bus from Pari Chowk in Greater Noida. According to police, after travelling around 47 km, she was dropped on Ring Road near the Kashmiri Gate bus terminal. The student later contacted the police and reported the incident, following which the case came to light on 31 August.<\/p>\n

Student had left home after a family dispute<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to police, the student had left home without informing her family after a dispute to visit her cousin, who lives in Noida. After leaving Mainpuri, she got off at Pari Chowk amid rain and darkness. While waiting for a vehicle to take her to Noida, an empty sleeper bus passed by.<\/p>\n

The student signalled the bus to stop. The driver and conductor allowed her to board and told her that the bus was going to Noida Sector 63. According to police, some time after the bus started moving, the conductor allegedly tried to behave inappropriately with the student.<\/p>\n

Both allegedly raped her inside the bus<\/strong><\/p>\n

The student told police that the driver and conductor allegedly raped her. When she resisted, both threatened to kill her. Curtains had been drawn over the bus windows, preventing people outside from seeing what was happening inside.<\/p>\n

The two allegedly dropped the student late at night on Ring Road near the Kashmiri Gate bus terminal and fled. The student contacted Kashmiri Gate police that night and reported the incident.<\/p>\n

CCTV helped identify bus; arrests made in Timarpur<\/strong><\/p>\n

After receiving the complaint, police examined CCTV footage from along the route to identify and trace the bus. The investigation team tracked down the bus and arrested driver Kuldeep and conductor Sandeep from a bus parking area in Timarpur. The bus was also taken into custody and sent for forensic examination.<\/p>\n

According to police sources, the bus had developed a technical fault on the day of the incident, following which the two men took it to a workshop in Surajpur, Noida, for repairs. After the repairs, they were taking the empty bus to Timarpur. It was during this journey that the student signalled the bus to stop at Pari Chowk.<\/p>\n

NHRC takes suo motu cognisance<\/strong><\/p>\n

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of the case. The commission has issued notices to the police commissioners of Delhi and Gautam Buddh Nagar, as well as the SP of Mainpuri. The three officials have been asked to submit detailed reports on the case within two weeks.<\/p>\n

Nirbhaya case also involved rape on a moving bus in 2012<\/strong><\/p>\n

On the night of 16 December, 2012, a 23-year-old woman was gang-raped on a moving bus in Delhi. She died at a hospital in Singapore on December 29 after suffering serious injuries. The case came to be known as the Nirbhaya case in the media.<\/p>\n

Six people were accused in the case. One was a minor, while another accused died by suicide in jail. Four convicts\u2014Mukesh Singh, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Kumar Singh\u2014were sentenced to death. All four were executed at Tihar Jail on 20 March, 2020.<\/p>\n
