Bihar has been placed on high alert following massive downstream flooding from neighbouring Nepal. Amidst the rising waters, a unique and dangerous health hazard has emerged.<\/p>\n

The Bihar Dairy, Fisheries and Animal Resources Department has issued an urgent public advisory warning citizens to completely avoid consuming unfamiliar or unusual fish species that have been swept into local water bodies along with the floodwaters.<\/p>\n

Why these fish are a health hazard<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

As flash floods ravage the region, water from various ponds, lakes, and rivers is merging and travelling vast distances. During this journey, the fish are in continuous contact with mud, domestic sewage, floating animal carcasses, and chemical pollutants.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

This prolonged exposure has contaminated the fish with highly infectious bacteria, viruses, fungi, and chemical toxins, rendering them entirely unfit for human consumption. Authorities have warned that until the flooded environments stabilise and naturally clean, tested fish become available again, no flood-caught fish should be eaten.<\/p>\n

Severe symptoms: Do not ignore vomiting or stomach pain<\/strong><\/p>\n

The government has urged the public to remain vigilant. Consuming these contaminated fish can trigger severe, infectious illnesses.<\/p>\n

If you or anyone in your family experiences any of the following symptoms after eating fish, you must seek immediate medical attention at the nearest health centre or hospital:<\/p>\n

    In West Champaran, local administration and fisheries officers have taken to the ground to prevent a major health crisis. The District Fisheries Office confirmed that extensive awareness programmes are being conducted across the district.<\/p>\n

    “We are informing the public that these fish coming from Nepal are highly infectious. A strict ban is being implemented so that the public does not buy, sell, or consume them. We are also advising fish sellers directly to refrain from putting these catches on the market,” ANI quoted DFO Nutan as saying.<\/p>\n

    Citizens have been requested to report any sightings of unusual fish to the local administration or district fisheries officers immediately.<\/p>\n

    Over 1,127 dead in Nepal<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

    The source of this contamination stems from the catastrophic flash floods of August 26 in Nepal, where the police have now confirmed a death toll of 1,127.<\/p>\n

    Heavy rescue operations have recovered hundreds of bodies across several districts, including Chitwan (348 bodies), Nawalparasi East (217 bodies), and Nuwakot (155 bodies). The Nepal Police have also issued a matching directive, pleading with their own citizens to refrain from eating any riverine food items carried by the floods.<\/p>\n

    Meanwhile, in Bihar, the crisis remains severe. In Bhagalpur’s Naugachia subdivision, residents of Madrauni village have been battling inundation for the past 15 days as the Kosi River continues to swell due to the heavy rainfall and rising waters flowing down from Nepal.<\/p>\n
