New Delhi\/Kathmandu<\/span>2 hours ago<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n A devastating flood triggered after a glacier burst in Nepal has caused widespread destruction. More than 1,200 people have died in the disaster across Nepal and China\u2019s Tibet region. Cities, roads, bridges and several hydropower projects have suffered extensive damage.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Within hours of the floods, India began sending relief supplies. As of September 3, India has sent a total of 74 tonnes of relief material in five consignments, including around 5 tonnes of essential medicines.<\/p>\n India\u2019s assistance has not been limited to relief supplies. Doctors, paramedics, rescue teams, tunnel experts, Bailey bridges and forensic experts have also been sent to Nepal.<\/p>\n In other words, India is helping Nepal on several fronts\u2014from searching for people trapped inside tunnels and conducting DNA tests on bodies to supporting reconstruction efforts. Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah has also thanked India for its assistance in Parliament.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Hospital built with India\u2019s help becomes a refuge for flood victims<\/strong><\/p>\n The Nepal-India Friendship Building in Nuwakot, Nepal, has emerged as a major source of relief for people affected by the floods. The building also houses an Ayurveda and alternative medicine hospital.<\/p>\n The Indian government rebuilt the hospital following the 2015 earthquake. Located at a higher elevation, it has provided shelter to hundreds of people forced to leave their homes due to the Bhotekoshi floods.<\/p>\n Eleven doctors at the hospital are treating people affected by the floods. Medical assistance is also being provided to those who have been taken from the area to different relief centres across the district.<\/p>\n The hospital operating with India’s help is providing people with a place to stay, treatment, and other essential facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n Where bridges have been washed away, routes will be reconnected with Bailey bridges<\/strong><\/span> Several roads and bridges have been washed away in the floods, cutting off connectivity to remote areas. To restore it, India is sending Bailey bridges to Nepal.<\/p>\n A Bailey bridge is a temporary bridge made from metal components. Its parts can be transported to the affected area and assembled on-site. This allows road connectivity to be restored quickly without waiting for a permanent bridge to be built.<\/p>\n According to the Indian Embassy, 16 trucks carrying equipment for a 230-foot-long single-lane modular steel bridge have reached Nepal. Equipment for installing seven more Bailey bridges will also be sent soon. Technical teams will also arrive in Nepal to install them.<\/p>\n On August 26, a bridge over the Trishuli River in Nepal’s Rasuwa district was swept away by the flood.<\/span><\/p>\n Indian experts search for people trapped in hydropower tunnels<\/strong><\/p>\n One of the biggest challenges facing Nepal after the floods is locating workers trapped inside hydropower tunnels. According to the Nepal government, more than 900 workers are feared to be trapped in several tunnels.<\/p>\n A team of Indian tunnel rescue experts arrived in Nepal on August 30. The team is working with the Nepal Army to search for workers inside hydropower tunnels in the flood-affected areas of Chilime and Langtang.<\/p>\n A team of \u2018rat miners\u2019 from Delhi-NCR has also offered to join the rescue operation in Nepal. The same team played a key role in rescuing 41 workers trapped inside the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarakhand in 2023.<\/p>\n The Indian tunnel rescue team continues to work in Nepal.<\/span><\/p>\n India helps with DNA testing to identify bodies<\/strong><\/p>\n With floodwaters receding, another major challenge for Nepal is identifying recovered bodies and missing people. India has sent a 19-member forensic team to Nepal for this purpose.<\/p>\n Indian experts are working with the Nepalese team to analyse DNA samples. The process is being carried out at two laboratories in the Kathmandu Valley\u2014the Nepal Police Central Forensic Science Laboratory and the National Forensic Science Laboratory in Khumaltar.<\/p>\n According to Nepal Police, 1,068 bodies had been recovered by Tuesday evening. In around 400 cases, only parts of bodies have been recovered. In such cases, DNA testing has become crucial for identifying the deceased.<\/p>\n The Indian team is conducting DNA tests on the remains of the bodies so that they can be handed over to the families.<\/span><\/p>\n India to rebuild school destroyed in the floods<\/strong><\/p>\n India\u2019s assistance is not limited to relief and rescue operations. India has also decided to rebuild Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School in Bidur, Nuwakot, which was damaged in the floods.<\/p>\n The school is also significant in terms of India-Nepal cooperation. Its old building was constructed with India\u2019s development assistance. The new building will now be constructed under India\u2019s High Impact Community Development Programme.<\/p>\n India has stood by neighbouring countries during disasters<\/strong><\/p>\n The ongoing relief operation in Nepal is another example of India\u2019s policy of helping other countries during times of disaster.<\/p>\n After the devastating earthquake in Nepal in 2015, India carried out a large-scale relief and rescue operation under Operation Maitri.<\/p>\n India also assisted relief and rescue efforts under Operation Brahma following the devastating earthquake in Myanmar in March.<\/p>\n This time too, India\u2019s role in Nepal is not limited to initial relief.
