According to them, they could hear cracking sounds coming from the walls shortly before the building collapsed.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Some students said they had left the building just 10\u201320 minutes before the incident. When they returned, everything had been reduced to rubble. Work had been underway in the building\u2019s basement for about a week.<\/p>\n The incident took place at around 1:30 pm on Sunday in Satya Niketan, near Delhi University\u2019s South Campus.<\/p>\n The collapsed building was around 40 years old. So far, the bodies of six people have been recovered from the rubble.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Front view of the five-storey building. We spoke to the students who lived there to find out what happened\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n \u2018If we had not left, we would have been trapped too\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n Mohammad Yasin, who lived in the hostel, said, \u201cI live in a flat. Yesterday, I stayed with my friend Waris in Satya Niketan. We kept talking throughout the night and woke up at around 12 noon. My friend Waris said the building was about to collapse and that there were cracks in it. We could hear cracking sounds.\u201d<\/p>\n Yasin said, \u201cWe then went to the bathroom to freshen up. There had been no water since late at night. I told him to come to my flat. When we returned 20 minutes later, we saw that the building had collapsed. Some of our friends were also trapped and are admitted to AIIMS. Neeraj and Nitish were injured after being trapped under the rubble. If we had not left, we would have been trapped too. The place was very small, yet they charged very high rent\u2014\u20b914,000\u201315,000.\u201d<\/p>\n Waris said\u2014\u2018We had been hearing cracking sounds from the walls for an hour\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n Waris said, \u201cI came here a month ago. Around 13\u201314 people lived in this hostel. There were two rooms on each of the five floors, with two people in each room. When I left, there were six or seven people there. Construction work had been going on for a week.\u201d<\/p>\n He said, \u201cAbout an hour earlier, I had jokingly told Yasin that the building was going to collapse. He did not take it seriously. We could hear cracking sounds coming from the walls. If we had not left to freshen up, we probably would not have survived. I was shocked when I heard that the building had collapsed. My friends are happy to see me safe.\u201d<\/p>\n Habib said\u2014\u2018The hostel had four floors and eight rooms\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n Habib is from West Bengal. He had taken a room in this hostel for college admission.<\/span><\/p>\n Habib said, \u201cThe college had been closed for three days due to the Janmashtami holiday, so I had gone to Shaheen Bagh. I was supposed to return this evening. College was reopening on Monday. Thank God I was not in the hostel at that time.\u201d<\/p>\n He said, \u201cThe boys\u2019 hostel had four floors and eight rooms. There was a shop on the ground floor, but it usually remained closed. There were two rooms on each floor, with two people living in each room. Some beds were vacant, though around 14 people stayed there comfortably. Construction work was going on downstairs, so some workers are believed to be trapped. People from nearby areas were also caught in the debris. One of my friends had left the PG just 10 minutes earlier. The building collapsed after he left.\u201d<\/p>\n Room in the hostel. Students living there shared this footage.<\/span><\/p>\n \u2018The owner only cares about collecting rent, never comes to check\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n Satya Niketan\u2019s narrow lanes are packed with hostels, PGs and eateries. The narrow lanes delayed the arrival of rescue equipment. Several students trapped under the debris were calling others for help and pleading for their lives. Eyewitnesses said they felt a strong tremor as soon as the building collapsed. When people came out of their homes, the \u2018Hostel Days\u2019 PG had been reduced to a pile of rubble.<\/p>\n Local residents began removing the debris with their hands and whatever tools were available. According to people at the spot, many students were in their PGs because it was Sunday. Priyanka, who has lived in the area for around 20 years, said several old houses here have been converted into five- or six-storey boys\u2019 PGs. The owners live elsewhere, collect rent online and do not maintain the buildings. The collapsed building had also not been maintained for a long time.<\/p>\n Local residents have demanded structural audits of old buildings in the area. They said permissions for constructing five-storey buildings, including basements, in residential areas should be reviewed and their safety should be inspected.<\/p>\n BJP MLA Anil Sharma said calls were coming from people trapped inside and that rescue teams were in constant contact with them. Police have appealed to people to stay away from the site so that the movement of ambulances and rescue teams is not obstructed.<\/p>\n The building is owned by Hari Ram Bansal.
