<\/p>\n According to Mundhe, a private hospital purchased an IV set for \u20b911.05, while its MRP was \u20b9325. Similarly, a syringe purchased for \u20b96.75 had an MRP of \u20b957.20, while a catheter bought for \u20b929.41 had an MRP of \u20b9310.<\/p>\n Wide gap between purchase price and MRP<\/strong><\/p>\n According to the FDA commissioner, patients have limited options to verify the actual prices of medical products and generally have to pay the amount listed on their hospital bills. He said the issue is not only the price difference but also the lack of adequate information and transparency for patients.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Based on a Maharashtra FDA survey, a review of the differences between purchase prices and MRPs of medical products has been recommended to the Department of Pharmaceuticals and the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA).<\/p>\n NPPA examining margins<\/strong><\/p>\n According to the report, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) is examining how much margin is being added by manufacturers and intermediaries in the medical supply chain.<\/p>\n Company documents and price lists are being compared with data from the Maharashtra FDA survey. Similar complaints have reportedly also emerged from Punjab, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n Hospitals raise concerns over costs<\/strong><\/p>\n Hospitals have said that transparency and accountability are important, but the costs associated with infrastructure, technology and patient safety must also be considered. They argue that financial sustainability is necessary for hospitals to continue making essential investments.<\/p>\n No broad price cap on most medical devices<\/strong><\/p>\n Under the Drugs (Prices Control) Order, 2013, prices of several essential medicines are regulated. However, most medical devices and consumables do not have a similarly broad price cap.<\/p>\n The MRP of non-scheduled products can be increased by a maximum of 10% in a 12-month period. However, this rule does not establish a fixed maximum selling price for every medical device.<\/p>\n The government has previously regulated the prices of certain medical products, including coronary stents and knee implants.
