Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fifth edition of Semicon India 2026 at Yashobhoomi in Delhi on Thursday.<\/p>\n

PM Modi said at SEMICON India conference that the world needs new and trusted locations for chip manufacturing and India is preparing itself for this.<\/p>\n

12 semiconductor projects approved under Semicon India programme: PM Modi<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The government has so far approved 12 semiconductor projects under the Semicon India programme to promote domestic chip manufacturing, added PM Modi.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

According to the government, commercial production has started at three units approved during the first phase of the programme.<\/p>\n

The Centre has also approved Semicon 2.0, the next phase of the initiative, which aims to further strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem.<\/p>\n

India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 expanded outlay to $13.5 bn from $8 billion in first phase, said PM Modi at SEMICON India event.<\/p>\n

The three-day event is being held from September 17 to 19, with this year’s theme being \u2018From Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem\u2019.<\/p>\n

The event brings together companies from the semiconductor and electronics sectors, along with investors, policymakers, researchers, startups, academics and students. PM Modi will also address the gathering after the inauguration.<\/p>\n

\u2018Sand to Silicon to Systems\u2019 experience to showcase chip-making process<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

A key attraction at the exhibition is the \u2018Sand to Silicon to Systems\u2019 experience. It will showcase the complete semiconductor journey, from silicon and chip design to manufacturing, advanced packaging and the final electronic system.<\/p>\n

The exhibition gives visitors an overview of how semiconductor chips are designed and manufactured and eventually integrated into electronic products.<\/p>\n

Companies and representatives from 52 countries to participate<\/strong><\/p>\n

More than 600 exhibitors, including around 300 international companies, are participating in Semicon India 2026. Delegations from more than 40 countries are also expected to attend.<\/p>\n

Country pavilions from Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Singapore and Sweden will be set up at the event. Several Indian states will also have their own pavilions.<\/p>\n

Government expands focus on chip design<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The government is also focusing on semiconductor design capabilities. According to official figures, electronic design automation (EDA) tools have been provided to more than 400 academic institutions and 105 startups.<\/p>\n

A total of 24 startups have been approved under the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme, which supports companies working on chip design and related technologies.<\/p>\n

Global semiconductor companies to participate<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Major companies including ASML, Applied Materials, Teradyne, Infineon, NXP, Tata Electronics, Micron, Lam Research, CG Power, Advantest and Tokyo Electron will participate in the event.<\/p>\n

Discussions will focus on investment, technology, supply chains and opportunities for business partnerships and collaboration in the semiconductor sector.<\/p>\n

Why semiconductors matter?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Semiconductor chips are essential for a wide range of products and technologies, including smartphones, laptops, automobiles, servers, data centres and artificial intelligence systems.<\/p>\n

Through Semicon India 2026, the government aims to showcase India’s progress in building capabilities across the semiconductor value chain, while highlighting new technologies and partnerships with global companies.<\/p>\n
