The Patna High Court asked the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the NFDC how the book is ultimately about Indian cinema.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:0\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">Patna-based Hindi writer and literary critic Anant Prasad Sinha has filed a petition challenging the award given to the book. He writes under the name &#8216;Anant&#8217;. In his petition, Sinha has sought the cancellation of the Best Cinema Book award at the 70th National Film Awards. The award was given to Aniruddha Bhattacharyya and Parthiv Dhar&#8217;s book, &#8216;Kishore Kumar: The Ultimate Biography&#8217;.<\/p>\n<div class=\"f3e032cb\"><picture class=\"c62bd949\" style=\"visibility:visible\"><source media=\"(max-width: 768px)\" type=\"image\/webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.bhaskarassets.com\/webp\/thumb\/360x0\/web2images\/521\/2026\/09\/19\/images__2_1789794098772.jpg\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 768px)\" type=\"image\/webp\" srcset=\"https:\/\/images.bhaskarassets.com\/webp\/thumb\/512x0\/web2images\/521\/2026\/09\/19\/images__2_1789794098772.jpg\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/images.bhaskarassets.com\/web2images\/521\/2026\/09\/19\/images__2_1789794098772.jpg\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"f97587ba\"\/><\/picture><\/div>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\"><strong>Notice issued to ministry, NFDC and authors<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:0\"\/><span style=\"font-size:0\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">The case was heard in the court of Justice Ajit Kumar. The court issued notices to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, NFDC, the jury members and both authors of the book. The book was published by HarperCollins. The award was announced on 16 August 2024 and presented at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi on 8 October 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">In the petition, Sinha said that the ministry overseeing the awards had not followed its eligibility conditions. The court&#8217;s oral order stated that, according to the petitioner&#8217;s counsel, the guidelines for nominations in the Best Book category at the 70th National Film Awards had been violated. These guidelines are set out in a notification dated 7 October 2024 in the Gazette of India, issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">The senior panel counsel for the Central government sought three weeks to file a response to the petitioner&#8217;s grievances. The court recorded the request. The next hearing in the case will be on 8 October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\"><strong>Anant Sinha challenged the award on two grounds<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">Sinha has cited two main grounds in the petition. He says the award committee violated the rules under which the honour should be given to the best book on Indian cinema published in any language in India.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">He also said that his book &#8216;Do Gulfaamon Ki Teesri Kasam&#8217; meets all the guidelines. If Kishore Kumar&#8217;s biography can be called a book on Indian cinema, can B R Ambedkar&#8217;s biography be called a book on the Indian Constitution?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">They said that before going to court, they had put this argument before the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. However, their view was not accepted there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\"><strong>About Kishore Kumar&#8217;s biography-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">Under the guidelines for the National Film Awards, the winner of the Best Book on Cinema award receives a Swarna Kamal and a cash prize of \u20b91 lakh. Burman advised him to develop his own identity. Once, while playing the tabla on a classroom table, his teacher reportedly told him that singing and playing music would get him nowhere. Kishore replied that one day he would become famous for it. It was around this time that he changed his name from Abhas to Kishore Kumar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">S.D. Burman&#8217;s advice proved crucial to his career. Instead of copying K.L. Saigal, Kishore developed his own style, including his distinctive yodelling. Burman later made him the voice of Dev Anand, opening the door to a string of successful songs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\"><strong>Famous for his unusual antics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">Kishore Kumar was known for being extremely particular about his payments. He followed a &#8220;no money, no work&#8221; policy and often refused to record until he received his full fee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">During the shooting of <em>Bhai-Bhai<\/em> in 1956, director M.V. Raman reportedly paid him \u20b95,000 less than agreed. When the director called &#8220;Action&#8221;, Kishore shouted about the unpaid amount and ran off the set doing somersaults.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">On another occasion, after receiving only half his fee, he arrived on set with half his head and moustache shaved. He reportedly told the director that since he had received only half his payment, his get-up was also only half complete.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">When producer R.C. Talwar allegedly withheld \u20b98,000, Kishore repeatedly stood outside his house shouting for the money until he was paid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">Despite his strict approach to fees, Kishore also worked without payment on several occasions, including for films associated with Rajesh Khanna and Danny Denzongpa. During one shoot, he reportedly drove a car far beyond the required location and eventually reached Khandala because the director had not called &#8220;cut&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">In another incident, a director obtained a court order requiring Kishore to follow instructions. When asked to get out of a car after a shot, Kishore reportedly remained inside for hours, saying the director had never told him to get out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">He also reportedly locked financier Kalidas Batwabbal inside a cupboard for two hours after becoming angry over a complaint made against him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\"><strong>Relationships and professional fallouts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">Kishore Kumar married four times. His first wife was Ruma Guha Thakurta, followed by actress Madhubala, Yogita Bali and, finally, Leena Chandavarkar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">After Yogita Bali divorced him and later married Mithun Chakraborty, Kishore reportedly stopped singing for Mithun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">He also had a professional fallout with Amitabh Bachchan. Kishore wanted Amitabh to appear in <em>Mamata Ki Chhaon Mein<\/em>, but after Amitabh declined, Kishore stopped lending his voice to songs picturised on him in films including <em>Naseeb<\/em>, <em>Coolie<\/em>, <em>Mard<\/em> and <em>Desh Premee<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\"><strong>His friendship with Mohammed Rafi<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">Although Kishore Kumar and Mohammed Rafi were considered rivals, they shared a close bond. When Rafi died in 1980, Kishore reportedly broke down beside his body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">Kishore later revealed that Rafi had helped him during the Emergency. After Kishore refused to sing at a government rally in 1975, his songs were reportedly banned from All India Radio and Doordarshan. He planted trees around his home, gave them names and spoke to them when he felt lonely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">By 1987, he had reportedly grown unhappy with the changing music scene and was planning to leave the film industry and return to Khandwa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\"><strong>Death on Ashok Kumar&#8217;s birthday<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">Kishore Kumar died of a heart attack on <strong>13 October 1987<\/strong>, the 76th birthday of his elder brother Ashok Kumar. He was 58.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">Just a day before his death, he had recorded &#8220;Guru Guru&#8221; with Asha Bhosle for <em>Waqt Ki Awaaz<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">His final rites were performed in Khandwa, the city where his remarkable journey had begun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\"><span class=\"e913fbaa d3886593\"><em>Here are some more amusing incidents from film shoots:<\/em><\/span><em\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\"><strong>He ran away after abusing Dev Anand on the set when he was forced to act<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">Ashok Kumar was working with Dev Anand in a film. The director needed a boy to appear with Dev Anand in a scene, so Ashok Kumar, who was standing nearby, said that Kishore Kumar could do the role. According to Lehren Retro, the director explained to Kishore Da that as soon as Dev Anand entered the room, he had to berate him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"word-break:break-word;text-align:left;white-space:pre-line\">Kishore Kumar nodded and signalled that he understood, but as soon as the call for action was given, something happened that left everyone stunned. The moment Dev Anand entered the room, Kishore Kumar actually hurled filthy abuse at him and ran off the set.
