Mizoram BJP MLA K Hrahmo called for the implementation of the UCC in the state. He said it would provide greater legal protection to Mizo women who marry non-tribal men.<\/p>\n

Hrahmo made the remarks during an event at the BJP office in Aizawl. He said the issue of implementing the UCC should be examined in view of the presence of non-tribal people in Mizoram.<\/p>\n

Hrahmo claimed that some non-tribal men already had more than one wife. Despite this, they marry Mizo women and later abandon them.<\/p>\n

He said the UCC includes a one-wife provision as well as rules for the division of property in the event of divorce. This could protect Mizo women and their children in such marriages.<\/p>\n

Allegations against non-tribal men<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Hrahmo, the MLA from the Palak seat in Siaha district, said that some non-tribal men involve their Mizo wives in their businesses. When the businesses fail, they abandon the women and their children.<\/p>\n

Hrahmo said that the UCC provides for a monogamous marriage system. It also contains provisions related to the division of property in the event of a divorce. According to him, these rules could help Mizo women in such marriages.<\/p>\n

Claim of political opposition to the UCC<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The BJP legislator said that people often oppose laws introduced by the central government for political reasons or because they do not have accurate information about their provisions.<\/p>\n

He said some laws initially faced opposition. Later, those laws proved beneficial to the people.<\/p>\n

Hrahmo said tribal communities had been excluded from the ambit of the UCC. He also said that in some states where the UCC has been implemented, the tribal population has also been kept outside its ambit.<\/p>\n

Congress also accused<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Hrahmo alleged that the Congress described the UCC as dangerous for political gain. This created apprehension among the people of Mizoram without them having complete information about its provisions.<\/p>\n

They called for a detailed study into the need for a UCC in tribal-majority states. Hrahmo reiterated that Mizoram should consider implementing a UCC to protect Mizo women who marry non-tribal people from exploitation.<\/p>\n
