A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped at a shop in Delhi’s Sadar Bazaar after she stepped out of her home to buy stationery on the night of September 16, police said on Monday.
According to police, the girl left home at around 11 pm to purchase notebooks, pens and other stationery items. The accused allegedly lured her to a nearby shop, where he tied her hands and legs and sexually assaulted her.
Police have arrested the accused, identified as 56-year-old Maqsood.
Police received PCR call around 11 pm
Police said they received a PCR call at around 11 pm on September 16 reporting the alleged sexual assault of a minor.
Teams from Sadar Bazaar police station, the ACP Sadar Bazaar office and the women’s police station reached the spot after receiving the information and began investigating the case.
Based on the victim’s complaint, a case was registered at the North District women’s police station under sections related to rape, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and wrongful confinement.
Accused sent to judicial custody
Police said the accused was arrested and the required legal procedures were completed. He was sent to judicial custody on the same day.
Further investigation is underway. The identity of the minor has not been disclosed in accordance with legal provisions.
Earlier minor’s gang rape-murder case in Delhi
The case comes eight days after another alleged gang rape and murder of a minor was reported in Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar.
On September 13, police found the girl’s body in an open field near Jaipal Rana’s farm on Kushak Road.
Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Lata Gupta had met the victim’s family and assured them of legal assistance, counselling and support during the judicial proceedings.
Police later arrested four people in connection with the case after examining footage from more than 50 CCTV cameras and tracing a tempo allegedly linked to the crime. Three of those arrested are minors.
