A man was arrested on Monday for allegedly strangling his young son to death over a dispute related to ancestral property in the North 24 Parganas district. Police have sealed the family home as part of the ongoing investigation.

The incident took place in Ward No. 8 of Baduria Municipality. The deceased child has been identified as Arijit Sarkar, while the accused is his father, Prosenjit Sarkar.

Grandfather transferred property to grandson instead

According to police and local sources, the family’s ancestral property was registered in the name of Prosenjit’s father. Instead of transferring the property to his son, the elderly man reportedly chose to register it in the name of his grandson, Arijit.

Family alleges accused held longstanding grudge

Family members alleged that the decision was taken because Prosenjit was unemployed and had previously sold property registered in his name to fund alcohol consumption, gambling and repay debts. They claimed he had squandered assets that had earlier been transferred to him.

Previous murder attempt allegedly failed earlier

Police said the property dispute allegedly became the main source of resentment for the accused. Family members also alleged that Prosenjit had earlier attempted to kill the child. On that occasion, relatives intervened and saved the boy, following which Prosenjit was arrested and later spent around six months in jail before being released.

Police arrest accused, seal family house

According to the complaint, on Monday morning, Prosenjit allegedly took advantage of a moment when other family members were not around and strangled Arijit to death inside the house.

After the incident came to light, the accused allegedly tried to flee but was caught by family members, who informed the police. Officers reached the spot, arrested Prosenjit, and took several family members to the police station for questioning.

Investigation into motive remains ongoing

Police have sealed the house for forensic examination and are questioning relatives separately as part of the investigation. Further inquiries are underway to establish the exact sequence of events.
