Heavy rainfall disrupted normal life across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Himachal Pradesh on Friday, with roads flooded, traffic snarls reported and several highways closed. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Delhi on Saturday.
Delhi records highest August rainfall in 15 years
Several parts of Delhi were inundated after heavy rain, with water levels reaching 3–4 feet on major roads. The flooding triggered long traffic jams and severely affected commuters.
According to IMD data, Delhi has received 127 mm of rainfall in the first week of August, the highest for the period since 2011.
The weather department has issued a red alert for Delhi for Saturday, warning of further heavy rainfall.
70 cities in UP affected by heavy rain
Heavy rainfall was reported across 70 cities in Uttar Pradesh on Friday. Several highways and roads in Ghaziabad and Noida were waterlogged, while residential areas and lanes were submerged under up to 4 feet of water.
In Bulandshahr, authorities have announced the closure of schools and colleges up to Class 12 on Saturday in view of the weather conditions.
Bihar rivers swell after rain in Nepal
Continuous rainfall in Nepal has caused the Bagmati River in Muzaffarpur to swell. The Gandak River has also overflowed, with floodwaters entering around 300 houses in Bagaha.
Authorities are shifting affected residents to safer locations. The Meteorological Department has forecast rain, thunderstorms and lightning in 10 districts of Bihar on Saturday.
162 roads closed in Himachal Pradesh
Heavy rain continued across several parts of Himachal Pradesh on Friday, causing the water level of the Beas River to rise rapidly.
As many as 162 roads have been closed due to rain-related disruptions, including the Chandigarh-Manali and Mandi-Pathankot highways. The continuing rainfall has raised concerns over further flooding and landslides in the state.
