| In the narrow, centuries-old lanes of Kumartuli, where generations of artisans have shaped clay into divinity, artificial intelligence has found an unexpected collaborator. This Durga Puja, technology is not replacing tradition; it is inspiring it.
AI-generated design meets traditional idol-making
Kumartuli artisan Indrajit Paul is creating what is being described as one of Bengal’s first AI-inspired Robot Durga idols, commissioned by Deshapriya Club in Kaliaganj, Uttar Dinajpur, for Durga Puja 2026.
The concept began with an AI-generated visual. But before it could become a clay idol, it had to pass the scrutiny of experienced sculptors.
One of Durga’s arms was missing a weapon, and the vahanas of Kartik, Saraswati and Lakshmi were absent. We cannot simply copy the AI image. We have to correct it while preserving the original concept
he said.
Craftsmen refine what artificial intelligence cannot
Rather than replicating the AI image exactly, Paul and his team are carefully modifying the design while retaining its futuristic aesthetics.
The idol will feature one of its most striking elements, a shape-shifting Mahishasur with the body of a human and the head of a water buffalo, giving the traditional mythology a contemporary visual interpretation.
We’ll reproduce the design as envisioned in the AI blueprint, but with the necessary artistic corrections. Human craftsmanship is still essential,
Paul explained.
Electric-blue lighting without direct power connection
The idol will incorporate rechargeable electric-blue LED lighting embedded inside Durga’s weapons, flowing hair and even her irises, creating a glowing robotic appearance. Unlike conventional illuminated idols, the lighting system will not require a direct electrical connection, significantly reducing fire risks during the festival.
Paul estimates that another month of work will be needed before the idol is ready.
Entire pandal to follow AI robot theme
The innovation extends beyond the idol itself. The Durga Puja pandal will also follow a robot-inspired concept developed from AI-generated designs, creating an immersive, futuristic experience for visitors.
According to the organisers, every major visual element, from the entrance to the interior décor—will reflect the theme of artificial intelligence and robotics.
Technology can inspire, not replace tradition
For Paul, the project is not about replacing artisans with artificial intelligence but demonstrating how technology can fuel creativity while relying on human skill.
Our robot-inspired theme reflects the idea that Maa Durga has become even more powerful in the age of AI and technology. Technology can enhance human imagination, but divine power remains supreme. Nothing can replace it,
he said with a smile.
As AI reshapes industries worldwide, Kumartuli’s latest creation offers a uniquely Bengali interpretation of that transformation, where algorithms provide the idea, but centuries-old hands continue to create the goddess.
