India will celebrate its 80th Independence Day on August 15, 2026, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi leading the celebrations from the historic Red Fort in Delhi.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi on August 10, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh said this year’s celebrations will also mark 150 years of Vande Mataram.
The National Song, which inspired millions during India’s freedom struggle, will be sung from the Red Fort ramparts for the first time as a tribute to its enduring legacy.
Vande Mataram to be sung as PM Modi arrives
Vande Mataram will be sung when Prime Minister Modi arrives at the Red Fort. He will then unfurl the National Flag and deliver his customary Independence Day address to the nation.
The celebrations will also focus on Yuva Shakti, recognising the contribution of India’s youth towards building a developed India, or Viksit Bharat, by 2047.
150 years of Vande Mataram
The floral decorations at the Red Fort will highlight the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram. Around 2,500 NCC cadets and My Bharat volunteers, including boys and girls, will form the words ‘वंदे मातरम्’ on Gyanpath opposite the Red Fort ramparts.
An Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopter will carry a banner marking 150 years of Vande Mataram and shower flower petals over the people gathered at the Red Fort.
Military bands to perform across India
To honour the National Song that united and inspired generations during the freedom struggle, military and security force bands are performing at prominent locations across India from August 8 to August 15.
Bands from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Indian Coast Guard, NCC, CRPF, ITBP, CISF, SSB, BSF, Integrated Defence Staff, RPF and Assam Rifles will perform at 343 locations across the country.
The performances are open to the public and are aimed at encouraging patriotic spirit among citizens.
Yuva Shakti to be highlighted
This year’s Independence Day celebrations will recognise young Indians who have achieved success in different fields.
The achievements of 19 Indian medal-winning students at the 2026 International Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematical Olympiads will be highlighted as an example of the success of India’s youth in science.
The students have been invited to the Independence Day ceremony and will be seated on the Red Fort ramparts.
Visual displays in the background will highlight India’s progress in nuclear and space technology. Floral decorations near the Guard of Honour area will depict the country’s journey towards Viksit Bharat @2047.
Around 5,000 special guests invited
Around 5,000 special guests from different walks of life have been invited to the celebrations. They include people who have contributed to and supported India’s journey towards a developed nation.
The guests include:
- Youth innovators involved in national innovation programmes
- Top-performing interns under the Prime Minister Internship Scheme
- High-performing startups supported under various government schemes
- Youth who have performed well under PM Kaushal Vikas Yojana
- Startups supported through the Startup India Seed Fund
- High-performing My Bharat volunteers
Beneficiaries of NAMASTE, PM AJAY and SEED schemes
Delhi government school students selected through various quizzes and competitions
Entrepreneurs, innovators and grassroots workers recognised
Special guests will also include entrepreneurs, innovators and grassroots workers who have contributed to the country’s development.
They include:
- International Yoga Day volunteers
- Women entrepreneurs supported under the PM Mudra Yojana
- Top-performing beneficiaries of PMAY (Urban)
- Innovators and scientists from different fields
- Sarthi, cab and taxi drivers of Bharat Taxi in Delhi
- Beneficiaries of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana
- Artisans covered under the PM Vishwakarma scheme
- Top-performing beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan (PM-SYM) Yojana
- Top-performing farmers under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samridhi Sah-Yojana (PM-MKSSY)
Silent workers to be honoured
The celebrations will also recognise workers who contribute quietly and work round the clock to support others.
Special guests from this category include:
- Street vendors covered under PM SVANidhi
- Urban sanitation workers under the Swachh Bharat Mission
- Top-performing Delhi Metro workers
- Workers involved in Kartavya Path and Central Vista projects
- Nursing orderlies, ward attendants and other staff from government hospitals in Delhi
More than 1,500 people from Delhi representing different states and Union Territories, dressed in traditional attire, have also been invited. They will showcase the diversity of India during the celebrations at the Red Fort.
Children to take part through competitions
Ahead of Independence Day, the Ministry of Defence, in collaboration with MyGov, organised several quizzes and competitions to involve children and young people in the celebrations.
These included an essay competition on ‘Role of AI in building a Viksit Bharat by 2047’ and a painting competition on ‘India 1947 vs India 2047’.
A series of online quizzes was also organised on topics including:
- Fundamental rights, duties, key articles and the makers of the Constitution of India
- Women in India’s freedom movement, from Rani Lakshmibai to Sarojini Naidu and beyond
- Major milestones in modern India, including technological progress and achievements in space technology
India’s achievements in nuclear technology
Around 600 winners of these competitions will also attend the Independence Day celebrations.
Other ministries and departments, the Delhi government and Delhi Police are also organising online and offline quizzes and activities to involve citizens in the celebrations of the national festival.
