As many as 24 girls from the same school fell ill, triggering concern and confusion over what caused them to develop similar symptoms. The students were brought to the emergency department of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata at different times.
Health Minister Dr Sharadwat Mukherjee visited RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last night to take stock of the condition of the students.

Students rushed to RG Kar Hospital
According to hospital sources, several of the students complained of symptoms including fever, abdominal pain and vomiting. The exact reason behind so many students falling ill around the same time remains unclear.
Doctors treat fever and stomach problems
The students are from Park Institution for Girls. Several students reportedly fell ill between Monday afternoon and evening. They were brought to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital between 2 pm and 8 pm. A total of 25 students were taken to the hospital.

Common cause of illness remains unknown
After their arrival, doctors examined each student and began treatment based on their symptoms. They were given necessary medication for fever, abdominal pain and vomiting. Doctors subsequently advised that the students be kept admitted for observation. Hospital sources said their health conditions are being monitored.
The key question now is how so many students from the same school fell ill at around the same time. Since several of them reportedly displayed similar symptoms, doctors and authorities are examining whether there could be a common cause.

Parents remain concerned over students’ health
Questions have also been raised over whether the students developed the symptoms after consuming any food or drink at school, or whether an infection could be responsible. However, no specific cause has been confirmed so far.
The incident has understandably caused concern among the students’ parents. The actual cause of the illness is expected to become clearer following medical observation and further tests. For now, the students remain under medical supervision, while the reason behind the incident remains unknown.
