Political activities regarding the 2027 Assembly elections in Punjab have started intensifying. Shiromani Akali Dal (Warris Punjab De) Punjab has announced its first candidate for the elections. The party has fielded Satwant Singh as a candidate from the Bassi Pathana Assembly seat. Satwant Singh is the son of Kehar Singh, who was convicted in the 1984 Indira Gandhi assassination case.
The candidate announcement was made by party working president Tarsem Singh. MP Sarbjit Singh Khalsa was also present on this occasion. Satwant Singh’s public identity is currently primarily associated with his father Kehar Singh’s name. Apart from this, not much information about him has come to light.
However, by making him their first candidate for 2027, Shiromani Akali Dal (Warris Punjab De) has certainly indicated that the party wants to prepare the electoral ground in Bassi Pathana through a face with a panthic and family background.
MP Amritpal Singh’s father Tarsem Singh announced the candidate at a press conference in Amritsar.
Kehar Singh’s name is linked to the 1984 case Kehar Singh’s name has been associated with the assassination case of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. On October 31, 1984, Indira Gandhi was shot and killed by her two security personnel Beant Singh and Satwant Singh. Kehar Singh was accused of being involved in the conspiracy of this assassination. The court found him guilty of criminal conspiracy and sentenced him to death. He was hanged in Tihar Jail on January 6, 1989.
Amritpal Singh won the election from jail
Amritpal Singh is among the prominent faces of the ‘Waris Punjab De’ organization. In 2022, he took over the leadership of the organization and became active on Panthic issues in Punjab. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, while in jail, he contested as an independent candidate from the Khadoor Sahib seat and won.
Currently, he is a Member of Parliament. Amritpal Singh was arrested by Punjab Police in 2023 and later action was taken against him under the National Security Act (NSA), and he remains in jail. Now his father Tarsem Singh is running the party.

Sarbjit Singh Khalsa is a Member of Parliament from the Faridkot Lok Sabha seat. He is the son of Beant Singh, who assassinated former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he won from Faridkot as an independent candidate. During the election campaign, he prominently raised Panthic issues, Sikh rights, and various matters related to Punjab.
Sarbjit Singh Khalsa is now playing a significant role in the political efforts associated with Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) and his name is prominently emerging in the party’s electoral strategy.
