The Hindi film Homebound was released in cinemas worldwide on September 26, 2025.
The Film Federation of India (FFI) will announce India’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2027 Academy Awards (Oscars) on August 11. The event will take place at The Club in Mumbai at 2:30 PM.
Notably, the 99th edition of the Oscars will be held on 14 March, 2027, at the Dolby Theatre in the Hollywood area of Los Angeles, USA.
Last year, the film Homebound was sent as India’s entry for the Oscars. The film starred Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa in lead roles.
In 2025, a total of 24 films in different languages were considered for India’s Oscar entry. Among these, Homebound was selected. At that time, N. Chandra, the chairperson of the selection committee, had said that the decision was very difficult.
N. Chandra had said, “These were films that touched people’s lives.” Comparing the selection committee to coaches, he had said that they were not judges, but were looking for players who had made their mark.
‘Homebound’ was directed by Neeraj Ghaywan
Homebound, directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, was based on Basharat Peer’s 2020 New York Times article ‘Taking Amrit Home’. The Hindi film was also screened at prestigious film festivals like Cannes and Toronto.
Besides ‘Homebound’, Neeraj Ghaywan has directed projects like ‘Masaan’, ‘Geeli Pucchi’ and ‘Juice’.
The film’s story is about two childhood friends living in a small village in North India. Both want to get a police job that can bring them the dignity they have long been denied.
‘Homebound’, produced by Karan Johar and Adar Poonawalla’s Dharma Productions, managed to make it to the Oscar longlist (top 15 films), but failed to secure a spot in the final top-5 nominations.

‘One Battle After Another’ won 6 awards, including Best Film
At the 98th Oscar Awards (2026), One Battle After Another won a maximum of 6 awards, including Best Film. Michael B. Jordan was chosen as Best Actor for Sinners and Jessie Buckley as Best Actress for Hamnet. Sinners received the most nominations, 16, but the film won 4 awards.
