A former Trinamool Congress MLA and Panihati leader, Nirmal Ghosh, arrested in connection with the alleged hurried cremation of the RG Kar rape and murder victim, was brought to Khardah Police Station on Friday morning.

Eggs hurled as police escort begins
As police took Ghosh from the police station to a prison van for his appearance before the Barrackpore Sub Divisional Court, protesters allegedly threw eggs at him. Ghosh wore a helmet to protect himself, but was still subjected to punches, slaps and kicks while walking towards the prison van.
Ghosh was arrested in Odisha and brought to West Bengal in connection with a fresh case based on a complaint filed by the father of the RG Kar rape and murder victim. Former councillor Sanjib Mukhopadhyay, another accused in the case, was also brought to the police station and faced protests.
BJP supporters raise slogans outside station
BJP workers and supporters gathered outside the police station, raising slogans of “chor chor”. Some protesters also carried garlands made of footwear and played DJ music during the demonstration.
The father of the RG Kar victim was also present at Khardah Police Station when Ghosh and Mukhopadhyay were being taken to court. He did not speak to the media, but appeared visibly relieved following the arrests. Sources said he may record a confidential statement before police and could be provided separate security.

New complaint led to fresh arrests
The fresh case follows allegations surrounding the cremation of the doctor’s body after she was found dead at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024. The victim’s father had alleged that the body was cremated hastily and without the family’s consent.
Ghosh was the MLA at the time and has been accused of playing a role in the hurried cremation. The victim’s father subsequently lodged a fresh complaint against three people, including Ghosh, Sanjib Mukhopadhyay and TMC councillor Somnath Dey.
