Singer Sonu Nigam has refuted a fake statement attributed to him amid the controversy surrounding actress Kriti Sanon’s Raksha Bandhan advertisement. Sharing a screenshot of a media report, the singer clarified that he had not commented on the matter.
A media house had claimed on social media that Sonu had made remarks related to Hinduism and patience. Responding to the claim, Sonu shared the post on social media, criticised the media outlet and clarified that the statement was not made by him.
News report was based on a fake post
The controversy began after a media publication shared a report with the headline, “Hindus are tolerant, do not test their patience: Sonu Nigam on Kriti Sanon ad controversy.”
After the report went viral, Sonu Nigam responded through his official social media account. Sharing the post, he wrote, “This is not me and I have never given such a statement. Wake up TOI, wake up media.”
Sonu Nigam is not active on X
According to reports, the statement attributed to Sonu Nigam had actually been posted by a parody or impersonator account on X, formerly Twitter.
Sonu clarified that he is not even active on the platform. The post from the fake account was reportedly treated as his official statement without verification, prompting him to publicly clarify the matter.
People accused this ad of misrepresenting the festival and hurting religious sentiments.
Controversy over her outfit and pet dog in the ad
The controversy began after a jewellery brand released a Raksha Bandhan-themed advertisement featuring Kriti Sanon. In the ad, Kriti was seen wearing an Indo-Western bralette-style blouse and tying a rakhi to her pet dog along with her brother.
Several social media users criticised the advertisement, calling it an insult to Indian culture. Some objected to Kriti’s outfit and demanded that a complaint be filed.
Some users also described the advertisement as insensitive towards Hindu traditions and festivals. One user wrote on X that action should be taken against the actress over the depiction of Raksha Bandhan and for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.
Kriti Sanon’s reply: ‘Culture is in the heart, not in the neckline’
Kriti Sanon later responded to the criticism through a social media post. She wrote that while ethnic fashion has evolved over time, a woman’s respect for her culture continues to be judged by what she wears.
The actress questioned when society would stop deciding what women should wear. She said that culture and traditions reside in a person’s heart, not in their neckline.
Kriti said: ‘I also tie Rakhi to my sister and pet dogs’
Speaking about Raksha Bandhan, Kriti said that the festival symbolises a bond of love and protection. She shared that she and her sister, Nupur Sanon, tie rakhi to each other because they protect and support one another just as much as any brother would.
Kriti added that the same love extends to her pet dogs, whom she considers an important part of her family.
Kriti Sanon was seen in ‘Cocktail 2’
On the work front, Kriti Sanon was recently seen in Cocktail 2. Directed by Homi Adajania, the film featured Kriti alongside Shahid Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna in lead roles.
