Ahead of Rahul Gandhi’s visit, the Congress high command has appointed Sachin Pilot as the new in-charge of the Punjab Congress. He will replace former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, who has been appointed in-charge of Assam.
Within the Punjab Congress, the faction led by former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had been unhappy with the party leadership and AICC in-charge Bhupesh Baghel since the decision to retain state president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring.
The Channi faction had been firm on its demand to remove Raja Warring and hand over the reins to another strong leader. Following Channi’s opposition, the high command has finally been forced to relent. Raja Warring’s position is now also under threat.
