The sequel to the 2009 blockbuster ‘3 Idiots’ could go on floors in April 2027. Director Rajkumar Hirani is currently working on the script. According to a Mid-Day report, Aamir Khan is expected to read the final script in February, after which work on the project may move ahead.
Aamir Khan to begin work after ‘Lalkaara’
Aamir Khan is currently scheduled to work on Ashutosh Gowariker’s ‘Lalkaara’, expected to shoot from October 2026 to March 2027. The ‘3 Idiots’ sequel may begin after he wraps up this project.
Kareena, Madhavan and Sharman may return
The sequel is expected to reunite Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi. Hirani earlier said the story is being developed as a continuation set years after the original, focusing on Rancho, Farhan, and Raju.
The sequel is being planned to bring the main cast of the 2009 original film back together on screen.

The sequel to ‘3 Idiots’ is currently at the writing stage. Rajkumar Hirani and his team will complete the final draft of the script early next year. Aamir Khan will read the screenplay in February and give his approval. As soon as Aamir Khan approves it, the makers plan to take the film on floors in April 2027.

The sequel is planned to bring the main cast of the 2009 original film back together on screen. Alongside the popular trio of Aamir Khan (Rancho), R Madhavan (Farhan) and Sharman Joshi (Raju), Kareena Kapoor Khan (Pia) may also reprise her role in the film. Released in 2009, ‘3 Idiots’ set several historic box-office records.

Before the sequel to ‘3 Idiots’, Aamir Khan will complete the shooting of director Ashutosh Gowariker’s sports drama film ‘Lalkara’. He will be busy with the shooting schedule of ‘Lalkara’ from October this year to March 2027.
The film is based on the historic Test series played against Pakistan in 1952 and the story of Lala Amarnath, the then captain of the Indian cricket team.

The Mahabharata project also back in the spotlight

It is worth noting that Aamir has been expressing his desire to work on the Mahabharata for more than a decade. Aamir Khan wants to make the epic not as a single film, but as a grand film series released in back-to-back chapters, like Hollywood’s famous ‘Lord of the Rings’ film series.
Discussion about ‘Mahabharata’ has resumed after a meeting with Jagadguru Satishacharya Maharaj.
During an interview with the BBC in 2024, Aamir Khan, referring to Mahabharata, said, “This is my dream project and is no less than a challenge for me. I am afraid that I might make a mistake while making it. This is a major responsibility because Mahabharata is very close to us. It is in our blood, which is why I want to make it absolutely correctly.”
Aamir had said, “I want to make every Indian feel proud and, at the same time, show the world what India has. I do not know when it will be made.”
