Two young men injected themselves with a steroid meant for horses to win a 6-kilometer race in Agra. As soon as the race ended, both their conditions deteriorated and they collapsed on the field.
Their companions took them to a local hospital, where doctors treated them for two hours. Their condition improved afterward.
According to the villagers, Shyamveer Sikarwar (16) came second, and Gaurav (22) came fourth in the competition. Both are also preparing for army recruitment.
The race competition was held on Thursday in the Kheragarh police station area, 35 kilometers from the district headquarters. According to the doctor, the two had taken the injection to improve their performance and reduce fatigue.
A running competition is organized every year in Aaila village. A large number of young people participate in it.

Shyamveer, a resident of Aaila village in the Kheragarh area, is studying in Class 11. His father is a farmer, and his two elder brothers work in private jobs. Gaurav, meanwhile, is an undergraduate student.
His father is also a farmer, while his elder brother works in a private job. According to the villagers, both of them regularly run and engage in physical exercise.
At around 7 a.m. on Thursday, the Marathon Committee organized a 6-kilometer race in the village. The first prize was set at ₹2,100, the second at ₹1,100, and ₹551 for the participant who finished third.
Medals were also to be awarded to the top 10 participants. Gaurav and Shyamveer also took part in the competition.
Both said, “To improve our performance, we injected ourselves with 3 ml of an injection meant for horses. After finishing the race, our health deteriorated. Our companions took us to the CHC in Kheragarh. We felt better after receiving treatment there.” An empty vial of the injection was also found in the youths’ possession.
The committee had also announced prizes for the race.

Competitions are held from time to time to nurture the talents of villagers. As part of this initiative, a 6-kilometer marathon was organized on Thursday. The race concluded successfully. Afterward, Shyamveer Sikarwar and Gaurav Sikarwar felt anxious, following which they were taken to the Kheragarh CHC. Both were sent back after some time. It is not known what they had taken.
Gaurav and Shyamveer are preparing for army recruitment. Both took steroids and ran in the competition.
Doctor says: Taking steroids without medical advice is dangerous
According to CHC Superintendent Dr. RK Singh, the two young men had taken steroid injections to improve performance and reduce fatigue. Their health deteriorated afterward. After approximately two hours of treatment, both of them showed improvement.
The doctor said that taking any kind of steroid or injection without medical advice can be seriously harmful. Young people preparing for recruitment and physical examinations may put their health at risk by resorting to such practices in the desire to improve their performance quickly.
