In a remarkable act of humanity, Bhutni police in the Malda district of West Bengal rescued a pregnant woman who went into labour in the middle of the night in a remote flood-hit village where all roads were submerged.
Darkness and floods cut off connectivity
The incident took place at around midnight, when the entire area was without electricity and plunged into darkness. Floodwaters had cut off road connectivity, making it impossible for vehicles or an ambulance to reach the village.
Family seeks urgent police assistance
The woman suddenly developed severe labour pain, leaving her family in a desperate situation. With no other help available, the family contacted Bhutni police and requested immediate assistance.
Police team launches midnight rescue operation
After receiving the call, the duty officer at Bhutni police station acted without delay. A police team quickly arranged a rescue boat and set out towards the woman’s home despite the dangerous conditions.
Officers navigate dangerous flooded waterways
Using torchlights to navigate through the darkness, the police team crossed the flooded route and strong currents to reach the stranded family.
The officers then carefully brought the woman onto the boat and began the journey through the dark and flooded waterways.
Woman taken safely through floodwaters
The police team eventually took her safely to the nearest rural hospital for medical care.
The midnight rescue has highlighted the humanitarian role played by the Bhutni police in reaching people stranded by the devastating floods.
