But the story took a turn after the groom was arrested. Now, his wife and social media influencer Çağla Öz has also been detained by police. The question is: what is the connection between the couple’s lavish wedding and the police investigation?

A few days ago, police arrested Mehmet Fatih Tancalan in connection with a social media post. Now, his wife has also come under investigation as part of the same case.
Their wedding had attracted considerable attention because large amounts of gold, foreign currency and cash were displayed at the ceremony.
According to reports, jewellery and other items worth around 44 million Turkish liras, or approximately ₹8.64 crore, were displayed at the wedding. Pictures and videos of the ceremony subsequently went viral on social media.
Police probe source of couple’s wealth
According to Turkey’s Sözcü website, the investigation is not limited to Mehmet Fatih Tançalan’s social media posts. Authorities are also examining the couple’s wealth.
Police are investigating the source of their wealth, including the gold, foreign currency and expensive items displayed at the wedding.
Their luxurious lifestyle shown on social media and the large amount of jewellery displayed at the wedding have also come under scrutiny.
Husband already sent to prison
Before Çağla Öz was detained, her husband had been arrested. He was brought before the court on charges of ‘legalising the proceeds of crime’, which means concealing criminal proceeds or making them appear legitimate.
The court later ordered that he be sent to prison.
As the investigation continues, Çağla Öz has also come under the police scanner.
Wife claims much of jewellery was rented
According to Turkish website Cumhuriyet, an important claim regarding the wedding jewellery emerged during questioning.
The accused reportedly said that many of the jewellery pieces displayed at the wedding had been rented.
According to the claim, the jewellery was rented from a jeweller known to them in the Muradiye area and was returned after the wedding.
This means the couple’s claim is that not all the jewellery displayed at the ceremony was their personal property.
Companies allegedly sponsored wedding
Another claim also emerged during the investigation, according to Sözcü.
The report said some companies sponsored the wedding because Çağla Öz was a social media influencer and appeared in their advertisements.
The party claimed that some of the expensive items and jewellery displayed at the wedding had been provided by companies as sponsorship.
However, court documents said sufficient information or documents proving this claim were not found in the investigation file.
Police conduct late-night operation
The investigation began after instructions from the Office of the Chief Public Prosecutor.
At around 3am on September 8, 2026, police reached Mehmet Fatih Tancalan’s house in Muradiye district of Van province, Turkey.
Police took him into custody from his home and later took him for questioning and completion of legal procedures.
The late-night police action also became a topic of discussion locally.

Police reportedly have 25 criminal records
According to Cumhuriyet, police have already registered 25 criminal records against Mehmet Fatih Tançalan.
