The result of the Datia by-election will be clear shortly. In the by-elections of the last 12 years, BJP has had an upper hand over Congress. From 2014 to 2026, a total of 52 by-elections were held in MP for Assembly and Lok Sabha. These included 49 Assembly and 3 Lok Sabha by-elections. Combining both elections, BJP’s strike rate has been 63 per cent and Congress’s 37 per cent.
The winning strike rate of MLAs who left Congress and joined BJP has been more than 70 per cent. Experts believe that in by-elections, the party that is in power in the state usually wins. However, in some seats, voters voted for candidates instead of the party.
Currently, BJP has 164 MLAs and Congress has 64 MLAs in MP. One seat is held by the Bharat Adivasi Party. If BJP wins the Datia seat, its MLAs will become 165. If Congress wins, its number of MLAs will become 65.
Years 2014 to 2018: 13 Assembly and 2 Lok Sabha by-elections were held
Between 2014 and 2018, 13 Assembly and 2 Lok Sabha by-elections were held in MP. Out of 13 Assembly seats, BJP won 8 and Congress won 5 seats. BJP’s strike rate was 62 percent and Congress’s was 38 percent. In the 2 Lok Sabha by-elections, 1 seat each went to BJP and Congress. Both had a strike rate of 50-50 percent.
Year 2019 to 2024: 36 Assembly by-elections, 1 Lok Sabha by-election
Between 2019 and 2024, 37 by-elections were held in MP. These include 36 Assembly seats and 1 Lok Sabha seat. Congress won 13 Assembly seats, while BJP won 23 Assembly and 1 Lok Sabha seat. BJP’s strike rate was 64 percent and Congress’s was 36 percent. After the by-elections held for 28 Assembly seats in 2020, the power in the state changed.
