The Election Commission has issued notices to Delhi voters over discrepancies in the information submitted in their enumeration forms as part of the SIR (Special Intensive Revision) process. The names include Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and several other prominent leaders.
However, Rekha Gupta’s voter entry has been validated. Her name will now be included in the final voter list of the Shalimar Bagh Assembly constituency. The list will be published on November 4.
Kejriwal received a notice because his voter record in the New Delhi Assembly constituency could not be linked to the previous SIR. His wife Sunita, parents and son have also received notices.
According to the Delhi CEO’s office, notices will be sent to 33.13 lakh voters included in the draft voter list over discrepancies in their enumeration forms. So far, 31.63 lakh voters have received notices.
The Delhi CEO’s office shared this information in a statement issued on Saturday, September 19. Rekha Gupta’s entry had been included in the list of logical discrepancies.
Officials said the Chief Minister received a notice over an age-related discrepancy. Her entry was validated after verification.
Every voter in Delhi was required to submit a filled-in form during the door-to-door verification drive conducted from June 30 to August 17.
Officials said most notices were issued because records could not be found in the previous Special Intensive Revision, or SIR, conducted in 2002.
These leaders also received notices
Former Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal and BJP leader Sudhanshu Mittal have also received notices.
Kapil Sibal, a voter in the New Delhi Assembly constituency, received a notice because his record could not be linked to the previous SIR.
Former Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said he received a notice over a discrepancy related to his name. He said he would get it corrected by submitting the required documents.
Sachdeva said his wife and brother are also among those who received notices. He said the necessary corrections would be made.
Kejriwal lost the New Delhi seat in the Delhi Assembly elections held in February last year.
AAP national media in-charge Anurag Dhanda reacted after Kejriwal and his family received notices.
He said, “What kind of process is this to remove the votes of Arvind Kejriwal ji, who has been Delhi Chief Minister three times, and his family from Delhi’s voter list?”
Claims and objections till September 30
The Delhi CEO’s office said notices are being issued as part of the claims and objections phase of the SIR. This phase will end on September 30.
The list of all 33 lakh voters who received notices has been uploaded on the Delhi CEO’s website.
The CEO’s office said, “Notices are being sent to voters whose records could not be linked to the voter list from the previous SIR.”
“This also includes voters whose records were found to have discrepancies while being linked to the previous voter list.”
Voters who received notices will have to submit their responses and required documents by October 29. These documents will have to be submitted to the Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) of the respective Assembly constituencies.
The Delhi CEO’s office said the names of prominent voters were included in the draft voter list on the directions of the Election Commission of India.
These include people associated with the judiciary, elected representatives, and the fields of art, culture, journalism, sports and public service.
These names had earlier been flagged for verification in the voter database. The claims and objections phase will now allow the required documents to be collected.
