For many children, the road is their home. Their lives begin and end on pavements, while begging at traffic signals becomes their only way to survive. Education and childhood dreams often remain far beyond their reach.
One woman takes responsibility for education
But one woman is determined to change that reality. Mitrabinda Ghosh has taken it upon herself to educate children living on the streets, using her own resources to run a small school for them.
The journey began during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when Mitrabinda started providing food to underprivileged children. Over time, she realised that providing meals was not enough. She decided to take responsibility for their education as well.
The school finds a roof overhead
The school that began under the open sky of a park in Southern Avenue now has a roof over its students’ heads. Mitrabinda has shifted the classes to a rented flat, giving the children a more secure and comfortable space to study. What started with just three children has now grown into a classroom of around 30 students.
For these children, the school is more than just a place to study. Mitrabinda ensures that they attend regular classes, participate in cultural programmes and, most importantly, get enrolled in formal schools. One of her students has already cleared the Madhyamik examination, while several others are preparing to appear for the Madhyamik examination in 2027.
Education comes with care and support
Mitrabinda also stands by the children during difficult times. When a child falls ill, she makes sure they receive the necessary care and support.
Her efforts have now inspired college students to join the initiative. During their free time, they visit the school and volunteer as teachers, giving the children more opportunities to learn and grow. The initiative has also expanded through the Ramdhanu Foundation, which aims to support children from birth until they turn 18.
Her vision goes beyond helping children
Mitrabinda, however, has bigger dreams. She hopes to open a home for women in the future and continue creating safe spaces for those who need support.
For children who once knew the pavement as their only home, this little school is opening a new door, one that leads towards education, dignity and a better future.
