A case of cyber fraud has come to light in the Sanjeevani Nagar police station area of Jabalpur. Searching for a doctor’s number on Google proved costly for a woman. The fraudsters withdrew 99 thousand rupees from the bank account of 45-year-old Varsha Jain on the pretext of filling an online form.
Varsha Jain, a resident of Rajul City, runs a cosmetics shop and has an account with the Bank of India’s Labor Chowk branch. On July 17, she searched for Dr. Ajay Seth’s number on Google using her mobile phone. After calling this number, the fraudsters started to entrap her.
Access gained by sending online link
During the call, an unknown person asked Varsha Jain to fill an online form and sent a suspicious link to her WhatsApp. As soon as the woman opened that link, filled in her son’s name, age, and mobile number, and submitted the form, the fraudsters gained access to her phone.
A few days later, on the night of July 22, between approximately 8:16 PM and 9:27 PM, a total of ₹99,000 was transferred from her bank account in six different instalments to unknown accounts. The woman realised she had been defrauded when she received transaction messages late at night.
After falling victim to the fraud, the affected woman immediately lodged a complaint with the cyber helpline number and the cyber cell. Based on the complaint, Cyber Cell Bhopal registered an online Zero FIR in the matter.
After receiving the Zero FIR from Cyber Cell Bhopal, a case has been registered against unknown accused at Sanjivani Nagar Police Station. Taking the matter under investigation, the police have started tracing suspicious bank accounts and mobile numbers.
