An abandoned railway coach has now been given a new life. An unusual rail coach restaurant has opened in front of Jalpaiguri Road station, an initiative of IRCTC and managed by a private operator.

Abandoned coach gets a new life

Jalpaiguri MLA Ananta Deb Adhikari and Sadar Sub-Divisional Officer Moin Ahmed inaugurated the restaurant. The old train coach has been refurbished and decorated to create a unique dining space.

The attraction is not limited to its appearance. The menu also brings flavours from North Bengal, including spicy Teesta Boroli fish, rice made from Tulaipanji rice, Gangarampur curd and handi mutton cooked live over charcoal.

Around 350 food options available here

The coach restaurant offers around 350 food and beverage options. Along with Bengali dishes, the menu includes rice meals, biryani, Chinese food, different starters, desserts, breakfast items, pakoras, mocktails and South Indian dishes.

Separate outdoor seating area also available

The inside of the abandoned coach has been designed in a way that retains the feel of a train compartment. The restaurant is fully air-conditioned and can accommodate around 60 people at a time.

Another seating area has been created outside the coach, with space for around 40 more people.

Entrepreneur expands coach restaurants across North Bengal

Restaurant entrepreneur Priyabrata Dubey, a businessman from Raiganj, said he has already opened several such coach restaurants at different locations across North Bengal. He said the menu was designed keeping in mind people with different tastes and preferences.

North Bengal artwork decorates the coach

The North Bengal theme can also be seen in the exterior decoration. Paintings depicting the region’s forests, architecture and wildlife have been created on the outer walls of the abandoned coach.

Restaurant offers food with regional ambience

The new rail coach restaurant therefore offers visitors not just food, but also a unique dining experience with a distinct North Bengal ambience.
