Little Indias in America Growing Rapidly

The Indian community in the US has grown from 18 lakh in 2005 to 50 lakh in 2025. The nearly 175% rise is a record for any foreign community.

The ‘American Dream’ remains alive for Indians. Despite President Donald Trump’s restrictions on visas, trade and green cards, it has not been halted.

According to a report, Indian families are moving from older affluent neighbourhoods to new suburbs, driven by the tech, healthcare and pharma sectors.

Indian families twice as wealthy as white Americans

More than 50 ‘Little Indias’ — townships with a significant Indian population — have emerged in the US over the past 20 years. This number is expected to rise to 75 in the next five years.

Indian families living in these areas are twice as wealthy as local white American families. The average income of Indian families is around ₹1.54 crore, compared with about ₹80 lakh for white American families. According to the report, this gap is expected to widen further in the coming years.

There are 50 Little Indias across Carolina, California and New Jersey. Another 25 are expected to emerge in Georgia, Arizona, Virginia, Seattle and Chicago.

Indian growth engine in Silicon Valley to accelerate

William Frey of the Brookings Institution said the Indian growth engine in Silicon Valley is set to accelerate further. Indians began their journey in Silicon Valley 25 years ago, and their presence is now expanding beyond the technology hub.

He said around 35% of Silicon Valley startups have at least one Indian-origin co-founder. The strong presence of Indians in the IT sector is also expected to increase the number of Indian townships in other US states.

Frey said the Indian presence is directly linked to America’s economic model. Indians contribute more to the US economy than any other foreign community entering the country.

Indian-Americans lead in higher education

Indian-Americans are nearly twice as likely as white Americans to hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, at 2.1 times the rate — a direct gap of around 39 percentage points.

Highest share of master’s and doctoral degree holders

The share of those holding master’s or doctoral degrees is also the highest. This represents the highest level of educational attainment among any racial group.
