A massive explosion took place at the residence of Trinamool Congress leader Dwijen Mondal in the Lalpol area of Uttarbhag in Baruipur. Police initially suspect that the blast may have been caused by a cylinder explosion.
Locals allege explosives were stored there
However, local residents have alleged that a large quantity of bombs was stored inside the house. They also alleged that Mondal had been involved in objectionable activities at the property for a long time. Residents further claimed that explosives were allegedly kept there to target BJP workers in the area. These allegations could not be independently verified.
Blast causes extensive damage nearby
The intensity of the explosion was reportedly so high that a major portion of the lower section of the house was almost destroyed. Several nearby houses also suffered damage following the blast. The incident triggered panic and tension in the locality.
Police launch probe into blast
Police personnel from the local police station reached the spot after receiving information about the explosion. An investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the blast and establish whether any explosive material was stored inside the house.
