A massive fire broke out at a four-storey furniture showroom in Kanpur early morning today (4 Aug), rapidly engulfing the entire building. Thick plumes of smoke and towering flames were visible from nearly two kilometres away as the blaze spread across all four floors within a short span.
Six feared trapped as firefighting operation continues
Officials said, “6 people are feared trapped inside the showroom. More than eight fire tenders have been deployed to douse the flames, while rescue operations are underway. The incident occurred near the old Govindpuri bridge.”
Traffic suspended near accident site
As a precautionary measure, the district administration has completely shut traffic on the old Govindpuri bridge to facilitate firefighting and rescue efforts. Emergency teams remain at the spot, and further details are awaited.

Cause of fire yet to be ascertained
Furniture businessman Gaurav Bhasin said, “The exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined. However, preliminary suspicion suggests that the blaze may have been triggered by a short circuit.”
CFO Deepak Sharma said the fire has been brought under control.
Fire brought under control, cooling operation underway
Chief Fire Officer (CFO) Deepak Sharma said, “The fire control room received information about the blaze at the furniture showroom in Govind Nagar. Around eight fire tenders from Fazalganj and Kidwai Nagar, along with a specialised water tanker, were rushed to the spot.”
He added, “Firefighters surrounded the building from three sides to contain the flames. The fire has now been brought under control, and only cooling operations are currently in progress.”
